What is the Hour of Truth?
And how would you know what is the Hour of Truth?
The people of Thamud and 'Aad denied [that there would be a] sudden calamity.
So as for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering blast.
And as for Aad, they were destroyed by a furious, roaring wind
which He unleashed against them for seven nights and eight days, nonstop. You could have seen its people lying dead as if they were hollow palm tree trunks.
Do you see anything left of them?
Then came Pharaoh and those before him, and the destroyed towns that indulged in sin.
They disobeyed their Lord's Messenger, so He seized them with an overpowering grip.
When the water overflowed, We carried your ancestors in the sailing ship
To make it a lesson for you to remember, so listening ears may recall it.
Then when the Horn is blown with a single blast,
and the earth and the mountains are lifted up and crushed with one blow,
on that Day, the Hour of Truth will occur.
The heaven will split open on that Day, since it will be so frail.
And the angels will be round its edges. On that Day, eight of them will bear your Lord's Throne of His majesty above them.
On that Day you will be exposed, and no secret of yours will remain hidden.
As for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, take my record and read it,
I expected that I would be held accountable."
So, he will have a pleasant life
in an elevated Garden,
its pickings are within easy reach.
"Eat and drink merrily for what you have done in days gone by."
As for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "I wish I was never given my record
and never knew what my account was.
If only death had really been the end.
My wealth has been of no use to me
and my power has vanished."
[God will say], "Seize him and shackle him.
Then drive him into Hell.
Then tie him with a chain whose length is seventy cubits."
For he would not believe in God, the Magnificent,
nor would he encourage feeding of the poor.
So he has no friend here this Day,
nor any food except scum,
that only sinners eat.
So I swear by what you see
and what you do not see
that this is the word of a noble Messenger.
And It is not the word of a poet; how little you believe,
nor the word of a soothsayer; how little you remember,
The gradual revelations of the Book, is from the Lord of the worlds.
Had he [the Messenger] falsely attributed some statements to Us,
We would have seized him by the right arm.
Then We would have slashed his lifeline,
and none of you could have protected him.
It [The Qur'an] is a reminder for the those who are mindful of God.
And We know that some of you will deny it.
It is a cause of great distress to the unbelievers.
And it is the Truth of certainty.
Exalt, then, the limitless glory of your Lord's magnificent name.
