40:1  Ha.Mim.
40:2  The revelation of the Book is from God, the Mighty, the Knowing,
40:3  The forgiver of sin, and the accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, the possessor of bounty. There is no god but He. To Him is the destination.
40:4  None dispute concerning the signs of God except those who disbelieve, so let not their going to and fro in the cities deceive you.
40:5  The people of Noah denied before them and the confederates after them; and every nation schemed against their messenger to seize him. And they disputed with falsehood to rebut the truth thereby, but I seized them, and how was My punishment.
40:6  And thus was the word of your Lord due against those who disbelieved, that they are the fellows of the fire.
40:7  Those who bear the throne and who are around it glorify with praise of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believed: 'Our Lord! You have included everything in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed your way, and guard them from the punishment of Hell.
40:8  Our Lord! Make them enter into gardens of Eden which you have promised them, and those who do well of their fathers and their spouses and their offspring; indeed, you are the Mighty, the Wise.
40:9  And guard them from evil deeds, and whoever you guard from evil deeds on that day, then verily you have had mercy on him, and that, it is the great success.'
40:10  Indeed, those who disbelieve shall be cried out to, 'Surely, God's hatred is greater than your hatred of yourselves when you were called to the faith and disbelieved.'
40:11  They shall say, 'Our Lord! You have caused us to die twice, and you have given us life twice; and we confess our sins. Is there then a way to get out?'
40:12  That is because when God alone was called upon, you disbelieved; but if partners were joined to Him, you believed; but judgment belongs to God, the High, the Great.
40:13  He is the one who shows you His signs, and sends down to you from heaven provision; but none remember except him who repents;
40:14  So call on God, sincere in religion to Him, averse although the disbelievers are.
40:15  Exalted of degrees. The Lord of the throne. He throws the spirit of His command upon whom He wills of His servants, to warn of the Day of Meeting.
40:16  The day they come forth, nothing concerning them shall be hidden from God. Whose is the kingdom today? God's, the One, the Subduer.
40:17  Today every soul shall be recompensed for what it has earned. No wrong today; indeed, God is swift in the reckoning.
40:18  And warn them of the approaching day, when hearts are at the throats, repressed; those who do wrong shall have no warm friend, nor intercessor to be obeyed.
40:19  He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the breasts conceal.
40:20  And God decides with truth; but those they call on besides Him do not decide with anything; indeed, God, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
40:21  Have they not travelled in the earth and seen how was the end of those who were before them? They were stronger than them in might, and traces in the earth; but God seized them for their sins, and there was not for them any defender against God.
40:22  That is because their messengers came to them with the clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so God seized them; indeed, He is strong, severe in punishment.
40:23  And certainly, We sent Moses with Our signs, and a clear authority,
40:24  To Pharaoh and Haman and Korah. Then they said, 'A lying magician.'
40:25  And when he came to them with the truth from us, they said, 'Kill the sons of those who believe with him, and let their women live.' But the plot of the disbelievers is only in error.
40:26  And Pharaoh said, 'Let me kill Moses; and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion, or that he will cause evil doing to appear in the land.'
40:27  And Moses said, 'Indeed, I seek refuge with my Lord and your Lord from every proud one who does not believe in the Day of Account.'
40:28  And a believing man of Pharaoh's people, who concealed his faith, said, 'Will you kill a man for saying, "My Lord is God," and indeed he has come to you with the clear proofs from your Lord? And if he is a liar, then upon him is his lie; and if he is truthful, there will befall you some of that which he threatens you; indeed, God does not guide him who is an extravagant liar.
40:29  O my people! Yours is the kingdom today, you are overcomers in the land, but who will help us against the violence of God, if it comes to us?' Pharaoh said, 'I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right direction.'
40:30  And he who believed said, 'O my people! Indeed, I fear for you the like of the day of the confederates,
40:31  The like of the case of the people of Noah and 'Ad and Thamud, and those after them; and God does not desire injustice for servants.
40:32  And O my people! Indeed, I fear for you the Day of Crying Out,
40:33  A day you will turn your backs, fleeing, having no protector from God; and whoever God leads astray, for him there is no guide.
40:34  And indeed Joseph came to you before with the clear proofs, but you ceased not to be in doubt concerning what He came to you with, until when he died, you said, "God will not send a messenger after him;" Thus God leads astray him who is extravagant, a doubter.'
40:35  Those who dispute concerning the signs of God without authority having come to them, it is greatly hateful with God and with those who believed; thus God sets a stamp upon every heart of a proud tyrant.
40:36  And Pharaoh said, 'O Haman! Build for me a tower, perhaps I may reach the ways,
40:37  The ways of the heavens, and may mount up to the god of Moses; for indeed, I surely think him a liar.' And thus was beautified for Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and He was hindered from the way; but Pharaoh's plot was not except in ruin.
40:38  And he who believed said, 'O my people! Follow me, I will guide you to the way of the right direction.
40:39  O my people! This, the worldly life, is only a provision, and indeed, the hereafter, it is the abode of stability.
40:40  Whoever does evil, he shall only be recompensed with the like of it; and whoever does right, whether male or female and a believer, then those shall enter the Garden; they shall be provided therein without count.
40:41  O my people! What ails me that I call you to salvation, and you call me to the fire?
40:42  You call me to disbelieve in God, and to join with Him what I have no knowledge of; and I call you to the Mighty, the Very Forgiving.
40:43  No doubt that what you call me to, there is no call for it in the world nor in the hereafter, and that our return is to God, and that the extravagant, they are the fellows of the fire.
40:44  And soon you will remember what I say to you; and I entrust my affair to God, surely, God sees the servants.'
40:45  So God guarded him from the evils of what they plotted, and the evil of punishment surrounded the people of Pharaoh.
40:46  The fire, they are exposed to it morning (After sunrise to mid-morning) and afternoon (Noon to mid-afternoon); and on the day the Hour shall arise: 'Admit the people of Pharaoh into the severest punishment.'
40:47  And when they argue in the fire, and the weak say to those who were proud, 'Indeed we, we were for you followers, so can you avail us against a portion of the fire?'
40:48  Those who were proud shall say, 'Indeed, we are all in it; indeed, God certainly has judged between the servants.'
40:49  And those who are in the fire shall say to the keepers of Hell, 'Call upon your Lord to lighten for us a day of the punishment.'
40:50  They shall say, 'Did not your messengers come to you with the clear proofs?' They shall say, 'Yes.' They shall say, 'Then call.' And the call of the disbelievers is not except in error.
40:51  Indeed, We will surely help Our messengers, and those who believe, in the worldly life and on the day the witnesses shall stand;
40:52  The day their excuse shall not avail the unjust; and for them is the curse, and for them is an evil abode.
40:53  And certainly, We gave Moses the guidance; and We made the children of Israel inherit the Book,
40:54  A guidance and a reminder for possessors of understanding.
40:55  So be patient; indeed, God's promise is true: and ask forgiveness for your sins, and glorify with praise of your Lord in the afternoon (Noon to mid-afternoon) and the morning (Dawn to sunrise).
40:56  Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of God without authority having come to them, there is nothing in their breasts but pride; they shall not attain it. So seek refuge with God, surely He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
40:57  Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of mankind do not know.
40:58  The blind and the seeing are not alike, nor those who believe and do good works and the evildoer; little is what you remember.
40:59  Indeed, the Hour is surely coming; there is no doubt in it; but most of mankind do not believe.
40:60  And your Lord said, 'Call upon Me, I will respond to you; indeed, those who are proud for My worship shall soon enter Hell, contemptible.'
40:61  God is the one who made for you the night to rest therein, and the day to see by; indeed, God is surely a possessor of grace upon mankind, but most of mankind give no thanks.
40:62  That is God, your Lord, the creator of everything. There is no god but He, so how are you turned away?
40:63  Thus those who used to deny the signs of God were turned away.
40:64  God is the one who made for you the earth a resting-place, and the heaven a building, and He fashioned you and made good your forms; and provided you of the good things. That is God, your Lord; then blessed is God, the Lord of the worlds.
40:65  He is the Living, there is no God but He. So call on Him, sincere to Him in the religion; praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds.
40:66  Say, 'Indeed, I am forbidden to serve those whom you call on besides God, since the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I am commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds.
40:67  He is the one who created you from dust, then from a sperm, then from a clot, then He brings you forth a child; then you reach your strength; then you become old, - and of you is he who dies before, - and that you may reach a named term, and perhaps you may become intelligent.
40:68  He is the one who gives life and causes death, and when He decrees a matter, then He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.
40:69  Have you not seen those who dispute concerning the signs of God, how they are turned away?
40:70  Those who call the Book, and what We have sent Our messengers with, a lie, but soon they shall know,
40:71  When the fetters are on their necks and the chains, they are dragged
40:72  In hot water. Then in the fire they shall be burned.
40:73  Then it will be said to them, 'Where is what you used to associate
40:74  Besides God?' They said, 'They have gone astray from us; nay, we did not used to call on anything before.' Thus God leads the disbelievers astray.
40:75  That is because you used to rejoice in the earth without right; and because you used to be exultant.
40:76  Enter the gates of Hell, to dwell forever in it; and evil is the abode of the proud.
40:77  So be patient; indeed, the promise of God is true; and whether We show you some of what We promise them, or We surely cause you to die, then unto us they shall be returned.
40:78  And certainly we sent messengers before you: of them are those whose stories We have related to you, and of them are those whose stories We have not related to you; and it was not for a messenger that he comes with a sign, except with God's permission; but when God's command came it was decided with truth, and there the vain-doers lost.
40:79  God is the one who made for you the cattle, that you may ride of them; and of them you eat,
40:80  And you have in them advantages; and that you may attain upon them a need in your breasts; upon them and upon the ships you are carried.
40:81  And He shows you His signs; so which of God's signs do you deny?
40:82  Have they not travelled in the land and seen how was the end of those before them, they were more numerous than them and stronger in might, and traces in the land? But of no avail to them was what they had earned.
40:83  And when their messengers came to them with the clear proofs, they rejoiced in what knowledge they had; and what they used to mock at surrounded them.
40:84  And when they saw Our punishment they said, 'We believe in God alone, and we disbelieve in what we used to associate with Him.'
40:85  But their faith was of no avail to them when they saw Our punishment, the course of God which certainly has passed away among His servants, and there the disbelievers lost.
