8:1
They ask you, (O’ Muhammad), about the spoils of war. Say: "The spoils are for Allâh and the ‘Messenger’." So act piously towards Allâh, adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey Allâh and the ‘Messenger,’ if you are inclined to profess a belief (in Allâh).
8:2
The ‘Monotheistic Believers’ are only those who, when Allâh is mentioned, their hearts tremble in awe, and when His ( Holy) ‘Verses’ are recited to them, they invigorate their faith. And they depend on Allâh with full trust.
8:3
They establish the regular Prayer and expend of what We have provided them.
8:4
Those in truth are the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ (of unfeigned faith). They have exalted grades of rank with their Lord, forgiveness and a bountiful sustenance.
8:5
Just as your Lord caused you to go forth from your home (for the Battle of Badr) in truth, while indeed, a party among the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ were averse to it.
8:6
They disputed with you concerning the Truth after it has become obvious to the eye, as though they were being driven to death with their eyes wide open.
8:7
(Remember, O’ ‘Monotheistic Believers’) when Allâh gave you the promise that one of the two parties that it should be yours, and you wished that the one unarmed should be yours, but Allâh intended to entrench the Truth by His Word and to eliminate those who lack Faith (in Allâh).
8:8
That He might entrench the Truth and abolish falsehood. No matter how detestable is to the ungodly sinners.
8:9
(Recall) when you implored the help of your Lord, and He responded to your invocation (saying): “I will definitely help you with one thousand ‘Angels’, rank on rank.
8:10
Allâh made it only as a joyful news so that your hearts would be comforted. Victory comes only by the help of Allâh; surely Allâh is All- Mighty, All-Wise.
8:11
(Remember) when He covered you with a slumber as a sign of security from Him, sending down water upon you from the sky, that thereby He might purify you, and remove the filth of ‘Satan’ from you, and that He might invigorate your hearts and make your feet firm therewith.
8:12
(Remember) when your Lord inspired the ‘Angels’ (saying): “Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism . And I will cast terror into the the hearts of those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh). Strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes."
8:13
That is because they opposed Allâh and His (Blessed) Messenger. Whoever opposes Allâh and His (Blessed) Messenger (will come to know that) Allâh is extremely severe in executing punishment.
8:14
(That is your punishment ), taste it then! And surely for those who lack Faith (in Allâh), there is also the punishment of Fire (in the ‘Hereafter’).
8:15
O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, when you meet those who excessively indulge in disbelief ( in Allâh) advancing in force, turn not your backs to them.
8:16
Whosoever turns his back to them on such a day- unless maneuvering for battle or turning to join another company-certainly draws upon himself the wrath of Allâh , and his abode is ‘Gehenna’. Worst indeed is that definitive course!.
8:17
It was not you who killed them, but Allâh did. You threw not when you did throw, but it was Allâh who did, that He might confer on the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ a graceful favor from Himself. Indeed, Allâh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
8:18
This (is what happened) and surely Allâh debilitated the machination of those who lack Faith ( in Allâh).
8:19
(O’ you Faithless people), if it happens that you ask for a judgment, then judgment has indeed come to you. And If it happens that you refrain ( from hostilities towards the ‘Monotheistic Believers’), it will be better for you. But if it happens that you revert (to hostilities), We too will revert (to punishment). And your host will avail you nothing, however numerous it be; and that Allâh is with ‘Monotheistic Believers’( of unfeigned faith).
8:20
O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, obey Allâh and His (Blessed) ‘Messenger’, and turn not away from him while you are hearing his commands.
8:21
And do not be like those who say, "We hear," but they do not discern.
8:22
Surely, the worst creatures, in the sight of Allâh, are the deaf and the dumb, who possess no self- awareness (that allows them to understand).
8:23
Had Allâh known any good in them, He would definitely have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would have turned away in a repulsive manner.
8:24
O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, respond to Allâh when the ‘Messenger’ calls you to that which gives you life, and know well that Allâh intervenes between a man and his heart, and that it is He Whom you are (destined) to be gathered.
8:25
Beware of an affliction which will definitely not smite exclusively the ones of you who go on sinning deliberately. And know that Allâh is extremely severe in executing punishment.
8:26
And recall the time, when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that men would snatch you away, how He sheltered you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good wholesome things, so that you might be thankful.
8:27
O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, betray not Allâh and His ‘Messenger’, nor do you betray your trusts knowingly.
8:28
And know that your possessions and children are but a temptation, and that surely with Allâh is a tremendous reward.
8:29
O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, if you act piously towards Allâh, He will grant you a distinction, and He Himself will deliver you from the consequences of your sins, and will forgive you. Allâh is the Lord of great bounty.
8:30
(O ’ Muhammad, recall the time) when those who excessively indulged in disbelief (in Allâh) devised plans against you in order to confine you, or murder you, or expel you. They planned but Allâh had a different plan for you, and Allâh is the best of all those who set up plans.
8:31
When Our (Holy) ‘Verses’ (of this Glorious ‘Qur’ān’) are recited to them, they say: "Well, we have heard this ( ‘Qur’ān’). If we wished, we could definitely say the like of it. This is nothing but mere legends of the ancients."
8:32
(Recall the time) when the ‘Polytheists’ said: "O’ Allâh, if this is indeed the truth from You, then send down upon us burning stones from the heavens or inflict on us a painful torment."
8:33
But Allâh would not chastise them as long as you, (Muhammad), are among them; neither would He chastise them while they are pleading for forgiveness
8:34
What pretext have they now that Allâh should not chastise them, when they hinder men from the ‘Sacred Mosque’, and they are not qualified to be its guardians? Only the ‘Pious’ are its true guardians. But most of them do not know.
8:35
Their prayer at the ‘Sacred House’ is nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. Then, taste the chastisement because of the indiscriminate and excessive indulgences in disbelief.
8:36
Surely, those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh) expend their wealth to inhibit (people) from (serving) the cause of Allâh. They will surely continue to expend it. But then it will become a source of regret and grief for them, and then they will be defeated. Those who excessively indulge in disbelief ( in Allâh) will be gathered to ‘Gehenna’.
8:37
Allâh intends to separate the wicked from the good, to put the wicked one upon another, and to heap them up altogether, and then cast them into ‘Gehenna’. These are the ones who are doomed to eternal perdition.
8:38
(O’ Muhammad), tell to those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh), if it happens that they desist, their past sins and wickedness will be forgiven. But if they return, then the example of the former peoples has already gone before them.
8:39
And (if they refuse to quit their perversion), then fight against them till there is no persecution, and all acts of worship are devoted to Allâh alone. If it happens that they desist, (then let them know that) Allâh is absolutely All-Seer of what they do.
8:40
But If they turn back, then (you must know) that Allâh is your Guardian. He is the most excellent Guardian, and the most excellent Helper!
8:41
And know that whenever you gain any spoils, the fifth of it is for Allâh and the ‘Messenger’, and for the near relatives, the orphans, the poor, and the hopeless wayfarer if you believe in Allâh and that which We have sent down unto our servant on the day of distinction, on the day whereon the two armies met. And Allâh is capable of doing whatever He wills.
8:42
(Recall the time) when you were encamped on the near side of the valley, and they were encamped on the further side, and the caravan was below you. Even if you had made a mutual appointment (to meet in a battle), you would definitely have failed the engagement. However, you were brought to an engagement without any previous appointment so that Allâh might accomplish the thing which was destined to be done, that he who perished ( on that day) might perish by clear proof (of His Power) , and he who remained alive might remain alive by clear proof. Indeed, Allâh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
8:43
(Recall the time) when Allâh showed them to you in your dream as few. If He had shown them to you as numerous, you would definitely have become disheartened, and would definitely have disputed concerning the matter. But Allâh preserved you from this. Indeed He is the All-Knowing of what is in the breasts.
8:44
And so, when you met in battle, He made them appear as few in your eyes, and He made you to appear few in their eyes, so that Allâh might accomplish what He had ordained. Unto Allâh are all affairs returned.
8:45
O’ you who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, whenever you encounter a party of the faithless people (in battle ), take a firm stand against them and commemorate the name of Allâh frequently, so that you may be successful.
8:46
Obey Allâh and His ‘Messenger’, and do not dispute among yourselves, lest you become disheartened and your strength depart from you. Resort to patience and constancy! Indeed, Allâh is with those who persist in patience and constancy.
8:47
Be not as those who (lack faith in Allâh ) when they went out of their houses in an exulting manner to appear with excessive display to men, and bar others from the way of Allâh, while Allâh encompasses, in knowledge, what they do.
8:48
(Recall the time) when ‘Satan’ made their evil deeds seem fair to them, and said: "No man can overcome you this day, and verily I will be near to help you." But when the two armies came in sight of one another, he turned upon his heels, and said: "Ay, I am clear of you. Ay, I see what you see not. Ay, I fear (the wrath of) Allâh ; for Allâh is extremely severe in executing punishment."
8:49
(Recall the time) when the Hypocrites, and those in whose hearts there was an infirmity, said: "Their faith has deluded them." Thus, whoever depends on Allâh with full trust (will know that) Allâh is absolutely All-Mighty, All-Wise.
8:50
If you could see, when the ‘Angels’ take away the souls of those who lack Faith (in Allâh ), how they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): "Taste the punishment of the inferno!”
8:51
This is because of that which your hands have sent on before you. Indeed, Allâh is not iniquitous towards His servants.
8:52
Their state is like that of the clan of ‘Pharaoh’ and of those before them who give no credence to the Revelations of Allâh. Thus, Allâh had chastised them for their sins. Indeed, Allâh is All-Strong, and extremely severe in executing punishment.
8:53
This is because Allâh never changes a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what they have in store in their own selves. Indeed, Allâh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
8:54
Their state is like that of the clan of ‘Pharaoh’ and of those before them who give no credence to the ‘Revelations’ of their Lord. Thus, We utterly destroyed them for their sins. We drowned the clan of ‘Pharaoh’. All of them were grossly unfair and morally wrong.
8:55
The worst creatures, in the sight of Allâh, are those who persist in disbelief (in Allâh) as they are not inclined to profess belief (in Allâh).
8:56
They are the ones with whom you made a covenant, but they break their covenant every time, and they act impiously (towards Allâh).
8:57
If it happens that you overtake them in war, disperse, by making them an example for those who will come after them, that they may be warned;
8:58
Or if you fear treachery from any of your allies, you may disregard your treaty with them. Indeed, Allâh demonstrates not his own love for the treacherous.
8:59
Let not those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh) reckon that they have escaped from the (divine) retribution. Surely they will never be able to frustrate the power of Allâh.
8:60
Therefore, prepare against them whatever you are capable of power and troops of horse, whereby you may terrify the enemy of Allâh, and your enemy, and other faithless people besides them, whom you know not, but Allâh knows them. Whatsoever you will expend in (serving) the cause of Allâh, it will be repaid to you, and you will not be treated unfairly.
8:61
But if they incline to peace, then incline to it (also), and depend on Allâh with full trust. Indeed, He is All-Hearer, All-Knowing.
8:62
If they intend to deceive you, (you must know that) Allâh is absolutely All-Sufficient for you. He is the One Who has supported you with His help and with the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ (of unfeigned faith),
8:63
And united their hearts. If you had expended whatever riches are on the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allâh united them. Indeed, He is All- Mighty, All-Wise.
8:64
O’ Prophet, Sufficient is Allâh to you, and whoever follows you of the ‘Monotheistic Believers’.
8:65
O’ Prophet, urge the ‘Monotheistic Believers’ to fight. If there are twenty steadfast persons among you, they will overcome two hundred, and if there be a hundred steadfast persons, they will overcome a thousand of excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh), because they are spiritually dead and blind people.
8:66
( O’ Monotheistic Believers) now has Allâh eased your burden for He knew that you were weak. If there be a hundred of you who persist in patience and constancy, they will overcome two hundred; and if there be a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand by the Permission of Allâh. And Allâh is with those who persist in patience and constancy.
8:67
It is not appropriate for a prophet to take captives unless he has battled strenuously on the earth. You, (group of ‘Monotheistic Believers’), may seek the fleeting gains of this ‘worldly life’, but Allâh would like you to have the ‘Hereafter’. Lo! Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
8:68
Had it not been for a decree from Allâh that had already gone forth, then a tremendous chastisement would have definitely touched you because of all the captives that you took.
8:69
So eat of the lawful good things from that which you have acquired in war, and act piously towards Allâh. Indeed, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
8:70
O’ Prophet, say to those of the captives who are in your hands: "If Allâh would find anything good in your hearts, He would give you a better than what has been taken from you; and He would forgive you, for Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
8:71
But if they intend to betray you, then (you must know that) they have already betrayed Allâh before. Therefore, He has given you the power over them. Lo! Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
8:72
Verily, those who adhered firmly to Islamic monotheism, emigrated and strove hard with their wealth and their lives for (serving) the cause of Allâh, as well as those who have given the ‘Prophet’ and his followers a refuge among them, and have supported them, these are all allies to one another. As for those ‘Monotheistic Believers’ who did not emigrate, you are not responsible for their protection until they emigrate. Yet if they ask assistance of you on account of their Faith, it is incumbent on you to help them except against a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance. And Allâh is All- Seer of what you do.
8:73
Those who lack faith in Allâh are allies to one another. Unless you keep these commandments, there will be persecution in the land, and great corruption.
8:74
Those who adhered firmly to Islamic monotheism, emigrated and strove hard in (serving) the cause of Allâh, as well as those who have given the Prophet and his followers a refuge among them, and have supported them, such are the true believers (of the unfeigned faith ). They will be granted forgiveness and bountiful provision.
8:75
Those who adhered to Islamic monotheism afterwards, emigrated and strove hard along with you, these also are of you. The relatives are nearer one to another in ordinance of Allâh. Indeed, Allâh is the All-Knowing of everything.
