47:1  As for those who reject Allah and discourage people from the path of Allah, He will render their deeds astray.
47:2  As for those who believe and perform deeds of righteousness and believe in what was revealed to Muhammed, as truth from their Lord, He will erase their sins, and He will heal their minds.
47:3  This is because the unbelievers follow lies while believers follow truth from their Lord. Allah explains for people by such examples.
47:4  [When war is necessary for self-defense,] when you engage the unbelievers, smite them on their necks. Finally, when the enemies are subdued, firmly hold them to a bond [a fair POW agreement] until time for generous release or ransom after the burden of war has ended. Thus you are commanded. If Allah had so willed, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them Himself, but [He allows war] in order to test you [for willingness to sacrifice] and others [in the event they might believe]. The deeds of those slain in the cause of Allah will never be for loss.
47:5  Soon Allah will guide them and improve their conditions.
47:6  [He will] admit them to the Paradise He has announced for them.
47:7  O Believers, if you will help Allah, He will help you. [He will] plant your feet firmly.
47:8  For those who do not believe, however, there is destruction. He will render their deeds all in vain.
47:9  That is because they hate the revelation of Allah, so He has made their deeds worthless.
47:10  Have they not traveled upon the earth and seen what became of those before them? Allah brought destruction to them. The same is for those who reject faith.
47:11  That is because Allah protects those who believe, but the unbelievers have no protector.
47:12  Truly, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. Those who reject Allah will frolic for enjoyment and consume as cattle consume [eating their fill with no higher interests]. The fire will be their home.
47:13  How many communities have We destroyed that had more power than your community, which drove you out? No one could help them.
47:14  Is one with clarity from his Lord no better than one to whom the evil of his/her conduct is appealing? [Is the one with clarity no better than] those who follow their own desires?
47:15  A parable of the Paradise promised to the righteous: There are rivers of unpolluted water, rivers of milk that never sours, rivers of [non-intoxicating] delicious wine for those who drink, and rivers of purified honey. For them are all types of fruits and grace from their Lord. Compare that to the fate of those who will continuously dwell in the fire and be given boiling water to drink, which will pierce their bowels.
47:16  Among (the lost) are those who listen to you [O Prophet], but finally, when they depart from you, they say to those who have received knowledge, “About what was he talking just now?” Allah has sealed their hearts, and they follow their own desires.
47:17  To those who receive guidance, He increases guidance and bestows on them their righteousness.
47:18  Do they merely wait for the hour so that it comes upon them suddenly? Signs of it have already come. When it is upon them, how can they then benefit from the warnings?
47:19  Know, therefore, that no god is there except Allah. Ask forgiveness for your sins and for other believing men and women. Allah knows where you go and your places of lodging.
47:20  Believers say, “Why is a [new]Chapter not sent?” But when a preciseChapter mentioning war is revealed, you will notice those with diseased hearts looking at you [Prophet Muhammed] with a look of one approaching death. It would be more appropriate for them…
47:21  …to obey and speak properly. When a matter is resolved [because of a revelation], it would have been better for them to have been true to Allah.
47:22  What would happen if you [hypocrites] were put in charge? Would you spread corruption in the land and break your family ties?
47:23  Such are the people whom Allah has condemned. He has made them unhearing and unseeing.
47:24  Will they not ponder over the Qur’an, or have they locked their hearts?
47:25  Those who regress as apostates after guidance was clearly shown to them are those whom Satan has prompted and sustained with false aspirations.
47:26  To those who hate what Allah has revealed, they say, “We will agree with you in certain matters.” Allah, however, knows their secrets.
47:27  What about when angels will take their souls at death and smite their faces and their backs.
47:28  This will be because they followed that which inflicted the wrath of Allah. They despised Allah’s good pleasure, so He made their deeds worthless.
47:29  Do those in whose hearts is a disease think that Allah will not expose their malice?
47:30  If We had willed, We would already have exposed them to you, and you would have known them by their marks. Surely, however, you will recognize them by the character of their speech! Allah knows your deeds.
47:31  We shall test you until We make evident those among you who strive and persevere in patience, and We shall test your reputation.
47:32  Those who do not believe, hinder others from following Allah, and reject the messenger after guidance has been made evident to them will not injure Allah in the least, but He will nullify their deeds.
47:33  O Believers, obey Allah and obey the messenger and do not do vain deeds.
47:34  Truly, those who don’t believe and who obstruct the path of Allah, and then die as unbelievers will not receive Allah’s forgiveness.
47:35  Do not be feeble, and settle for peace [on inequitable terms] when you are prevailing, for Allah is with you and will never allow your deeds to be for loss.
47:36  The life of this world is only frolic and entertainment. If you believe and guard against evil, He will grant you Your rewards and will not ask you for your possessions.
47:37  If He were to ask you for all of them, asking persistently, you would covetously withhold, and He would bring out all your resentment.
47:38  You are invited to invest in the way of Allah, but among you are some who are stingy. Anyone who is stingy is so at his/her own expense. Allah has no needs, and it is you that are deprived. If you backslide, He will substitute in your stead another people, and then they would not be like you.
