31:1  Alif Lam Meem,

31:2  these are verses of the wise Book,

31:3  guidance and mercy for those who do good

31:4  who establish prayer and give the purifying alms, and who are sure of the Hereafter.

31:5  They are rightly guided by their Lord, and they are successful.

31:6  Some people prefer idle talk [over God’s message] in order to lead those without knowledge away from God’s path and to ridicule it. They will have a humiliating punishment.

31:7  And when our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly, as if he had not heard, as if there was deafness in his ears, so give him news of a painful punishment.

31:8  Those who believe and do good deeds will have Gardens of Delight

31:9  where they will remain forever. This is the true promise of God, for He is the Revered, the Wise.

31:10  He created the heavens without visible support and firmly set mountains on Earth, in case it should move under you, and spread every kind of creature over it. And from the sky, We sent down rain and caused every noble pair of plants to grow therein.

31:11  This is God’s creation. Show me, then, what your other gods have created. Indeed, the unjust are lost.

31:12  We gave Luqman wisdom, "Be grateful to God. Whoever is grateful does so only for his good, [whereas] whoever is ungrateful [should know that] God is rich beyond need and praiseworthy.

31:13  Luqman said to his son while instructing him, "O my son, do not attribute any partners to God. Associating others with him is a great transgression."

31:14  And We have commanded the human being to care for his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and your parents; all will return to Me

31:15  but if they strive to make you associate with Me something of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. Do, however, [continue to] keep them company in [this] world according to what is right, but follow the way of those who turn towards Me. Then you will all return to me, and I will make you understand all that you have done

31:16  “My son, if something weighs as little as a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or the Earth, God will bring it forth. God is Most-Subtle, All-Aware.

31:17  My son, establish prayer, order what is obviously right, forbid what is obviously wrong, and be patient [in the face of] all that happens to you. Surely, these acts require courage.

31:18  And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] away from people, and do not walk in arrogance, for God does not like any vain and boastful person.

31:19  And walk modestly, and lower your voice; the most disagreeable sound is the braying of donkeys."

31:20  Do you not see that God has made everything in heaven and on Earth subservient to you and has abundantly showered you with His favors, [both] seen and unseen? Yet, some people argue about God in ignorance without guidance or illuminating Scripture.

31:21  And when they are told, "Follow what God has revealed," they say, " We will follow what we found our fathers doing." [What?] Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blazing Fire?

31:22  Whoever turns his face in submission to God while he is doing good has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. God determines the outcome of [all] matters.

31:23  And do not let the denial of those who continue to deny the truth grieve you, [Prophet]. They will return to Us, and We will tell them everything that they have done. God knows everything that lies within the heart.

31:24  We will grant them some enjoyment for a while, [but] then We will force a massive punishment on them.

31:25  And, if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and Earth?" They would say, "God." Say, "[All] praise is [due] to God," but most of them do not understand.

31:26  Whatever is in the heavens and Earth belongs to God, for God is the Rich beyond need, the Praiseworthy.

31:27  If all the trees on Earth were pens and the sea [were] ink with seven [more] seas to replenish it, God’s words would not be exhausted , for God is Revered, Wise.

31:28  Creating and resurrecting all of you is [for God] like creating and resurrecting a single soul. God is All-Hearing and All-Seeing.

31:29  Do you not see that God causes the night to merge into the day and causes the day to merge into the night and has made the sun and the moon subservient [to His laws], each running its course for a specified term, and that God is aware of all you do?

31:30  Thus, it is because God is the Truth, and whatever they invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Exalted, the Great.

31:31  Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the grace of God so that He may show you some of His signs? Surely there are signs in this for everyone patient and grateful.

31:32  And when waves come over them like [giant] shadows, they call out to God, sincere in their devotion to Him, but when He delivers them safely to shore, some of them waver. Only a treacherous and ungrateful person refuses to acknowledge Our signs.

31:33  People, be conscious of your Lord and fear a Day when no father will be able to rescue his son, nor will a son be able to rescue his father at all. God’s promise [of resurrection] is the Truth, so do not let this worldly life deceive you, nor deceptive thoughts about God delude you.

31:34  God has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs, but no soul knows what it will reap tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. God [alone] is All-Knowing and All-Aware.
