So if you gain dominance over them in the war, disperse by them (those) who (are) behind them, so that they may take heed.

If you meet them in war, deal with them in such a manner as to deter those behind them (who follow them and those who will come after them), so that they may reflect and be mindful
Should you come to war with them, then deal with them so as to strike fear into those who come after them (as an example), that per chance (or possibly) they may remember
So definitely in case you ever catch them in the war, then deal with them so as to disperse the ones (who1..are) behind them, that possibly they would constantly remember
If you encounter them in combat, make them a fearsome example for others who would follow them so that they all may learn a lesson
Dr. Munir Munshey
Therefore, if you overcome them on the battlefield, deal with them very sternly, so as to strike terror among them, and to serve as a lesson for their successors. Perhaps, they would remember
Dr. Kamal Omar
So if you interlock (yourself) with them in War — then by (routing) them strike terror in those that are behind them per chance they get admonition
Therefore if you find these (breakers of trust) in battle array, then (by inflicting an exemplary punishment upon them) disperse those behind them so that they may be admonished
So if you come upon them in the battlefield, then by killing them (for violating the peace treaty) in an exemplary manner, make those who are behind them (also) run on their heels so that they may learn a lesson of warning
If you catch them in war, disperse them and those behind them that perhaps they will take a lesson.
Sayyed Abbas Sadr-Ameli
So, when you confront them in war, (by punishing them) scatter the ones behind them so that they might be admonished
Al-muntakhab fi tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim
Therefore, whenever and wherever you Muslims meet them in an active hostile contention, reduce them into a useless form to set an example of their humiliation serving as a deterrent to those who attempt thereafter to war against you
Then if you dominate them in war, disperse them (in such a manner that) those who succeed (them not being present with) them, they (too) may be mindful.
