| Arabic | | مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ الْأَعْرَابِ أَن يَتَخَلَّفُوا عَن رَّسُولِ اللَّهِ وَلَا يَرْغَبُوا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ عَن نَّفْسِهِ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يُصِيبُهُمْ ظَمَأٌ وَلَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا يَطَئُونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ الْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَّيْلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِ عَمَلٌ صَالِحٌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِين |  |

| of Allah, | l-lahi | اللَّهِ | ا ل ه | |
| they prefer | yarghabū | يَرْغَبُوا | ر غ ب | |
| their lives | bi-anfusihim | بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ | ن ف س | |
| his life. | nafsihi | نَفْسِهِ | ن ف س | |
| That is | dhālika | ذَلِكَ | ذ ل ك | |
| because [they] | bi-annahum | بِأَنَّهُمْ | ا ن ن | |
| afflict them | yuṣībuhum | يُصِيبُهُمْ | ص و ب | |
| fatigue | naṣabun | نَصَبٌ | ن ص ب | |
| hunger | makhmaṣatun | مَخْمَصَةٌ | خ م ص | |
| (the) way | sabīli | سَبِيلِ | س ب ل | |
| (of) Allah, | l-lahi | اللَّهِ | ا ل ه | |
| they step | yaṭaūna | يَطَئُونَ | و ط ا | |
| any step | mawṭi-an | مَوْطِئًا | و ط ا | |
| that angers | yaghīẓu | يَغِيظُ | غ ى ظ | |
| the disbelievers | l-kufāra | الْكُفَّارَ | ك ف ر | |
| they inflict | yanālūna | يَنَالُونَ | ن ى ل | |
| an enemy | ʿaduwwin | عَدُوٍّ | ع د و | |
| an infliction | naylan | نَيْلًا | ن ى ل | |
| is recorded | kutiba | كُتِبَ | ك ت ب | |
| (as) a deed | ʿamalun | عَمَلٌ | ع م ل | |
| righteous. | ṣāliḥun | صَالِحٌ | ص ل ح | |
| allow to be lost | yuḍīʿu | يُضِيعُ | ض ى ع | |
| the reward | ajra | أَجْرَ | ا ج ر | |
| (of) the good-doers. | l-muḥ'sinīna | الْمُحْسِنِينَ | ح س ن | |
