| Arabic | | وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَاهُ بِهَا وَلَٰكِنَّهُ أَخْلَدَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ فَمَثَلُهُ كَمَثَلِ الْكَلْبِ إِن تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ أَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَث ذَّٰلِكَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا فَاقْصُصِ الْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُون |  |

| So his example | famathaluhu | فَمَثَلُهُ | م ث ل | |
| (is) like (the) example | kamathali | كَمَثَلِ | م ث ل | |
| (of) the dog, | l-kalbi | الْكَلْبِ | ك ل ب | |
| you attack | taḥmil | تَحْمِلْ | ح م ل | |
| [on] him, | ʿalayhi | عَلَيْهِ | ع ل ى | |
| he lolls out his tongue | yalhath | يَلْهَثْ | ل ه ث | |
| if you leave him, | tatruk'hu | تَتْرُكْهُ | ت ر ك | |
| he lolls out his tongue. | yalhath | يَلْهَثْ | ل ه ث | |
| (is the) example | mathalu | مَثَلُ | م ث ل | |
| (of) the people | l-qawmi | الْقَوْمِ | ق و م | |
| who | alladhīna | الَّذِينَ | ا ل ل ذ ى | |
| denied | kadhabū | كَذَّبُوا | ك ذ ب | |
| [in] Our Signs. | biāyātinā | بِءَايَاتِنَا | ا ى ا | |
| So relate | fa-uq'ṣuṣi | فَاقْصُصِ | ق ص ص | |
| the story | l-qaṣaṣa | الْقَصَصَ | ق ص ص | |
| so that they may | laʿallahum | لَعَلَّهُمْ | ل ع ل ل | |
| reflect. | yatafakkarūna | يَتَفَكَّرُونَ | ف ك ر | |
