And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Gracious." They say, "And what (is) the Most Gracious? Should we prostrate to what you order us?" And it increases them (in) aversion.

Yet when they [who are bent on denying the truth! are told, “Prostrate yourselves before the Most Gracious.” they are wont to ask, “And [who and] what is the Most Gracious? Are we to prostrate ourselves before whatever thou biddest us [to worship]?” - and so [thy call] but increases their aversion
And when it is said unto them: Prostrate to the Beneficent! they say: And what is the Beneficent? Are we to prostrate to whatever thou (Muhammad) biddest us? And it increaseth aversion in them
When it is said to them, "Prostrate to (Allah) Most Gracious!", they say, "And what is (Allah) Most Gracious? Shall we prostrate to that which thou commandest us?" And it increases their flight (from the Truth)
And when it is said to them: Prostrate to the Beneficent Allah, they say: And what is the Allah of beneficence? Shall we prostrate to what you bid us? And it adds to their aversion
When they are told, Prostrate yourselves before the Gracious One, they ask, Who is this Gracious One? Shall we prostrate ourselves before whatever you will?This increases their aversion
And when it was said to them: Prostrate yourselves to The Merciful, they said: And what is The Merciful? Will we prostrate ourselves to what thou hast commanded us? And it increased aversion in them.‡
When they are told: "Bow down on your knees before the Mercy-giving," they say: "What is the Mercy-giving" Are we to bow down on our knees just because you order us to?" It merely increases their disdain.
When it is said to them, “Prostrate to the Most Compassionate,” they ask ˹in disgust˺, “What is ‘the Most Compassionate’? Will we prostrate to whatever you order us to?” And it only drives them farther away.
Yet, when they are told, "Prostrate yourselves before the Merciful-to-all," they say, "And who is the 'Merciful-to-all'? Should we prostrate ourselves before whatever you order us [to worship]?" And they turn farther away.
And when it is said to them: “Prostrate yourself to the Gracious (Allah),” they ask: “What is the Gracious? Shall we fall down in prostration because you (O Muhammad) command us?" It increases dislike in them.
And when it is said unto them, “Prostrate before the Compassionate,” they say, “And what is the Compassionate? Shall we prostrate before that [to] which you command us?” And it increases them in aversion
And if they are told: "Prostrate to the Almighty." They Say: "And what is the Almighty Shall we prostrate to what you order us" And it increases their aversion
Yet when they are told, ‘Bow down before the Lord of Mercy,’ they say, ‘What is the Lord of Mercy? Should we bow down before anything you command?’ and they turn even further away
And when it is said unto them: prostrate yourselves unto the Compassionate, they say: and what is the Compassionate? Shall we prostrate ourselves unto that which thou commandest us? And it increaseth in them aversion
When you say to them: "Bow before Ar-Rahman," they say: "What is Ar-Rahman? Should we adore whoever you ask us to?" And their aversion increases further
When they are told to prostrate to the All-Merciful, they say, ´And what is the All-Merciful? Are we to prostrate to something you command us to?´ And it merely makes them run away all the more.
When they are told: "Prostrate before the All-Merciful (to express your submission to Him)," they say: "What is the All-Merciful? Shall we prostrate before whatever you command us?" Your call but increases them in (their haughty) aversion
When they are told: ‘Prostrate yourselves before the All-beneficent,’ they say, ‘What is ‘‘the All-beneficent’’? Shall we prostrate ourselves before whatever you bid us?’ And it increases their aversion
And when it is said unto them, "Adore you the Beneficent", they say, "What is the Beneficent? Shall we adore what you do order us?" And it only increases their aversion
And when it is said to them, "Prostrate yourselves to The All-Merciful, " they have said, "And what is The All-Merciful? Shall we prostrate ourselves to what you command us?" And it has increased them in repulsion. * A prostraion is to be peformed after reading this
When they are told to prostrate themselves before the Beneficent God, they say, "Who is the Beneficent God? Why should we prostrate ourselves before the one whom you have commanded us to?" This only increases their rebelliousness
And when it is said to them, .Prostrate yourselves to the RaHman (the All-Merciful, Allah),. they say .What is RaHman? Shall we prostrate ourselves to the one to whom you direct us?. And it increases nothing in them except aversion
Yet when it is said to them, "Adore the Beneficent!" They say, "What is the Beneficent? Are we to adore just what you say?" And it merely increases them in disgust
And when it is said to them, "You adore (Allah) the Most Gracious (Ar-Rahman)!" They say, "And what is (Allah), the Most Gracious? Shall we adore that which you order us?” And it increases their flight (from the truth)
And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion
When it is said to them, "Prostrate yourselves before the Most Compassionate," they ask: "Who is that Most Compassionate? Are we to prostrate just because you order us to?" It merely increases their disdain

When they are asked to fall prostrate before Rehman they say, "Who is Rehman? Shall we fall prostrate merely because you tell us to do so?" Thus, their hatred grows

When it is said to them, “Prostrate to the Merciful Benefactor”, they say, “And what is the Merciful Benefactor? And why should we prostrate to that which you advise us?” It increases their flight from the truth
If they are told: “Prostrate before the Most Kind,” they say, “And what is the Most Kind? Should we prostrate to anything you tell us?” Thisreminder increases their hatred.

Controversial, deprecated, or status undetermined works
When they are told, “Fall prostrate before the Most Gracious (the same way that all prophets used to worship Him: Matthew 26-I King 18:Numbers 20:6 &Joshua 5:& 7:Genesis 17:3,)” they jokingly say, “What is the Most Gracious? Shall we fall down in prostration because you say so?” Thus, this invitation simply increases their rebellion

But when they are told, 'Bow yourselves to the All-merciful,' they say, 'And what is the All-merciful? Shall we bow ourselves to what thou biddest us?' And it increases them in aversion
And when it is said, ' Adore ye the Merciful!' they say, 'What is the Merciful? shall we adore what thou dost order us?' and it only increases their aversion
When it is said unto the unbelievers, adore the Merciful; they reply, and who is the Merciful? Shall we adore that which thou commandest us? And this precept causeth them to fly the faster from the faith
But when it is said to them, "Bow down before the God of Mercy," they say, "Who is the God of Mercy? Shall we bow down to what thou biddest?" And they fly from thee the more
When they are told: ‘Bow down before the Merciful,‘ they ask: ‘Who is the Merciful? Would you have us bow down to whatever you will?‘ And they grow more rebellious

When they are told, “Prostrate to Rahman” (i.e. feel your inexistence in the sight of your essential Names-based reality) they say, “What is Rahman? Why should we prostrate to something you tell us to?”... This (offer) increases their hatred even more. (This verse is a verse of prostration.)

And when they -the infidels- are asked to prostrate their reason to divine revelation and to Him AL-Rahman, they insolently and defiantly ask: "Who is AL- Rahman! Shall we prostrate in reverence and submission to an object of worship just because you enjoin us to do so". Their statement accords with their actions They withdraw further and their mental attitude is an incitement to their aversion
(He it is) Who created the skies and the earth and that which is between these two in six days (periods) then He set the balance on the throne (of the universe), the Beneficent (Allah), so ask one who is informed about Him.
