Arabic وَقَالُوا هَٰذِهِ أَنْعَامٌ وَحَرْثٌ حِجْرٌ لَّا يَطْعَمُهَا إِلَّا مَن نَّشَاءُ بِزَعْمِهِمْ وَأَنْعَامٌ حُرِّمَتْ ظُهُورُهَا وَأَنْعَامٌ لَّا يَذْكُرُونَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا افْتِرَاءً عَلَيْهِ سَيَجْزِيهِم بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ zoom
Transliteration Waqaloo hathihi anAAamun waharthun hijrun la yatAAamuha illa man nashao bizaAAmihim waanAAamun hurrimat thuhooruha waanAAamun la yathkuroona isma Allahi AAalayha iftiraan AAalayhi sayajzeehim bima kanoo yaftaroona zoom

 And they say, "These cattle and crops (are) forbidden, no (one) can eat them except whom we will," by their claim. And cattle, forbidden (are) their backs and cattle not they mention (the) name (of) Allah on it (as) an invention against Him. He will recompense them for what they used to invent. zoom


Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning
Muhammad Asad And they say, "Such-and-such cattle and fruits of the field are sacred; none may eat thereof save those whom we will [to do so]" -so they [falsely] claim; and [they declare that] it is forbidden to burden the backs of certain kinds of cattle; and there are cattle over which they do not pronounce God's name - falsely attributing [the origin of these customs] to Him. [But] He will requite them for all their false imagery. zoom
M. M. Pickthall And they say: Such cattle and crops are forbidden. No-one is to eat of them save whom we will - in their make-believe - cattle whose backs are forbidden, cattle over which they mention not the name of Allah. (All that is) a lie against Him. Muhammad Sarwar They, (the pagans), have said that their cattle and farms are dedicated to private idols and that no one can consume (the produce) except those whom We wanted, in their opinion. They prohibited the riding of certain animals and they ate the flesh of certain animals slaughtered without a mention of the Name of God. Instead, they ascribed falsehood to Him. They will all be given an evil recompense for their sinful invention. zoom

They also arbitrarily prohibit the riding of some animals (saying that it has been dedicated to some elite or saint. Aren't such VIP favors very much alive in the modern day JAHILYAH?) And there are cattle over which they pronounce not the Name of Allah (but of someone else to please people). Such are their fabrications in His Name. Dr. Munir Munshey Of their own accord, they (make certain rules and) declare, "(The meat of) this animal and (the crop of) that field are prohibited. Controversial, deprecated, or status undetermined works
Bijan Moeinian They have come up with self-imposed laws [upon charity, for example,] and say that only those people can eat such and such animal that do such and such. they have forbidden some animals to give ride or to carry loads. They do not even ask the Lord's permission to slaughter an animal [after all, it is God Who has given life to these animals and His permission (as the real owner) should be asked for their slaughter.] They have fabricated all these nonsense, attributing them to God. Pretty soon God will deal with them accordingly. zoom
Faridul Haque And they said, “These cattle and crops are forbidden; only those whom we wish can eat them” - in their opinion - and some cattle are those which they have forbidden riding upon, and some cattle over which they do not mention the name of Allah while slaughtering - all this is fabricating lies against Allah; He will soon repay them for their fabrications. zoom

Rashad Khalifa They said, "These are livestock and crops that are prohibited; no one shall eat them except whomever we permit," so they claimed. They also prohibited the riding of certain livestock.
