O APOSTLE! Be not grieved by those who vie with one another in denying the truth: such as those who say with their mouths, "We believe," the while their hearts do not believe; and such of the Jewish faith as eagerly listen to any falsehood, eagerly listen to other people without having come to thee [for enlightenment]. They distort the meaning of the [revealed] words, taking them out of their context, saying [to themselves], "If such-and-such [teaching] is vouchsafed unto you, accept it; but if it is not vouchsafed unto you, be on your guard!" [Be not grieved by them-] for if God wills anyone to be tempted to evil, thou canst in no wise prevail with God in his behalf. It is they whose hearts God is not willing to cleanse. Theirs shall be ignominy in this world, and awesome suffering in the life to come
The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab
O Messenger! Do not grieve for those who race to disbelieve—those who say, “We believe” with their tongues, but their hearts are in disbelief. Nor those among the Jews who eagerly listen to lies, attentive to those who are too arrogant to come to you. They distort the Scripture, taking rulings out of context, then say, “If this is the ruling you get ˹from Muḥammad˺, accept it. If not, beware!” Whoever Allah allows to be deluded, you can never be of any help to them against Allah. It is not Allah’s Will to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world, and they will suffer a tremendous punishment in the Hereafter.
Safi Kaskas
Messenger, do not be saddened by those who hurry to deny the truth; such as those who say, "We believe," and do not have any faith in their hearts and the Jews who eagerly listen to any lies and to those who have never met you. They distort the meaning of the words, taking them out of their context, saying, "If you have already been given this [in your Scriptures], accept it, but if you have not, then be on your guard!" Do not be saddened by them, for if God wills someone to be tempted by evil, you will not be able to do anything for them. These are the ones whose hearts God is not willing to cleanse. They will be disgraced in this world, and will have terrible suffering in the Hereafter.

O Messenger! Not let grieve you those who hasten in (to) [the] disbelief - of those who said, "We believe" with their mouths and not believe their hearts, and from those who (are) Jews. They (are) listeners to falsehood, (and) listeners for people other, (who have) not come to you. They distort the words from after their context, saying, "If you are given this [so] take it but if not you are given it then beware." And (for) whom intends Allah his trial, then never will you have power for him against Allah anything. Those (are) the ones never intends Allah that He purifies their hearts. For them in the world (is) disgrace and for them in the Hereafter (is) a punishment great.

O Messenger! Let not them grieve thee who vie one with another in the race to disbelief, of such as say with their mouths: "We believe," but their hearts believe not, and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk who come not unto thee, changing words from their context and saying: If this be given unto you, receive it, but if this be not given unto you, then beware! He whom Allah doometh unto sin, thou (by thine efforts) wilt avail him naught against Allah. Those are they for whom the Will of Allah is that He cleanse not their hearts. Theirs in the world will be ignominy, and in the Hereafter an awful doom
Yusuf Ali (Saudi Rev. 1985)
O Messenger! let not those grieve thee, who race each other into unbelief: (whether it be) among those who say "We believe" with their lips but whose hearts have no faith; or it be among the Jews,- men who will listen to any lie,- will listen even to others who have never so much as come to thee. They change the words from their (right) times and places: they say, "If ye are given this, take it, but if not, beware!" If any one's trial is intended by Allah, thou hast no authority in the least for him against Allah. For such - it is not Allah's will to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a heavy punishment

Messenger, do not be grieved by those who vie with one another in denying the truth; those who say with their tongues, We believe, but have no faith in their hearts; from among the Jews also, there are those who listen eagerly to any lies. They listen to you to convey to others [religious leaders] who do not come to you [out of pride and conceit]. They [these leaders] take words out of their context and say, If this be given to you, receive it, but if not, then beware! If anyones trial is intended by God, you cannot in the least prevail against God on his behalf. Those whose hearts God does not intend to purify shall be subjected to disgrace in this world and a severe punishment in the Hereafter
Shakir
O Messenger! let not those grieve you who strive together in hastening to unbelief from among those who say with their mouths: We believe, and their hearts do not believe, and from among those who are Jews; they are listeners for the sake of a lie, listeners for another people who have not come to you; they alter the words from their places, saying: If you are given this, take it, and if you are not given this, be cautious; and as for him whose temptation Allah desires, you cannot control anything for him with Allah. Those are they for whom Allah does not desire that He should purify their hearts; they shall have disgrace in this world, and they shall have a grievous chastisement in the hereafter
Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar
O Messenger! Let them not dishearten thee—those who compete with one another in ingratitude among those who said: We believed with their mouths while their hearts believe not. ^And among those who became Jews^ are ones who hearken to lies, ones who hearken to folk of others who approach not thee. They tamper with the words out of context. They say: If you were given this, then, take it, but if you are not given this, then, beware! And for whomever God wants to test, thou wilt never have sway over him against God at all. Those are whom God wants not to purify their hearts. For them in the present is degradation. And for them in the world to come is a tremendous punishment.
T.B.Irving
0 Messenger, do not let those who rush off into disbelief worry you, such as those who say: "We believe" with their mouths, while their hearts do not believe. Some of those are Jews who are listening for [the sake of] lying, listening for other folk who do not come to you. They lift words out of their context, saying: "If you are given this, then take it; while if you are not given it, then watch out!" God will never let you control someone whom God wants to test in any way; those are the ones whose hearts God does not want to purify. They will have disgrace in this world, while in the Hereafter they will have terrible punishment,
Abdul Hye
O Messenger (Muhammad)! Let not grieve you those who race each other into disbelief, of those who say: “We believe” with their mouths but their hearts don’t believe. Of those who have become Jews are listeners to falsehood, listeners to other people who have not come to you. They change the words from their context; they say: “If you are given this, you take it, but if you are not given this, then beware!” Whom Allah wills, falls into error, and you will never be able to do anything for him against Allah. Those are the ones whom Allah does not want to purify their hearts; for them there is disgrace in this world, and for them there is a great punishment in the Hereafter.
The Study Quran
Messenger! Let them not grieve thee, those who hasten unto disbelief, those who say, “We believe” with their mouths, while their hearts believe not, and those who are Jews, who listen to lies and to others who have not come to thee. They distort the meaning of the word, saying, “If you are given this, then take it, but if you are not given this, then beware!” For whomsoever God desires that he be tried, thou hast no power to avail him aught against God. They are those whose hearts God desired not to purify. Theirs is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter they shall have a great punishment
Talal Itani & AI (2024)
O Messenger, let not those who rush into disbelief grieve you—those who say with their mouths, “We believe,” but their hearts don’t believe. Among the Jews, listeners to lies, receptive to a different people who didn’t come to you. They alter words from their places, saying, “If you are given this, accept it; but if not, then beware.” If God intends someone to be misguided, you won’t possess for him any protection against God. These are the ones whose hearts God does not intend to purify. For them, there is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will have a severe punishment.
Talal Itani (2012)
O Messenger! Do not let those who are quick to disbelief grieve you—from among those who say with their mouths, 'We believe,' but their hearts do not believe; and from among the Jews—listeners to lies, listeners to other people who did not come to you. They distort words from their places, and they say, 'If you are given this, accept it; but if you are not given it, beware.' Whomever God has willed to divert, you have nothing for him from God. Those are they whose hearts God does not intend to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them is a great punishment in the Hereafter
Dr. Kamal Omar
O you the Messenger! Shall not make you grieve those who show haste in disbelief out of those who said: “We have Believed”, with their mouths but their hearts do not Believe. And out of those who Haadoo (act as) listeners to falsehood acting as listeners for a nation of other people who have not come to you. They disturb a statement after (it has already been put at) its due places. They say: “If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given this, then take protection (against it). And (for) whosoever: Allah desires his trial, then you posses not for him from Allah, anything. They are those, Allah does not intend that He may purify their hearts. For them, in the world (is) disgrace, and for them, in the Hereafter (is) a great punishment
M. Farook Malik
O Messenger! Do not grieve for those who plunge headlong into unbelief; those who say with their tongues: We believe, but have no faith in their hearts; and do not grieve for those Jews, who listen to lies and spy for other people who had never come to you. They tamper with the words of Allah and take them out of their context and say: "If you are given such and such commandment, accept it; but if it is other than this, reject it." If Allah intends to put anyone to trial, you have no authority in the least to save him from Allah. Such people are those whose hearts Allah does not desire to purify; they will have humiliation in this world and a grievous punishment in the Hereafter
Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali
O you Messenger, do not let them grieve you that vie swiftly with one another in disbelief, of the ones who say, "We believe, " with their mouths, and their hearts do not believe. And of the ones who have Judaized are constant listeners to lies, (and) constant listeners to other people, (who) have not come up to you, perverting the Wordings from their original meanings (Literally: even after their positions). They say, "In case you are brought this, then take it, and in case you are not brought it, then beware." And whomever Allah wills to (subject to) temptation, then you will never possess for him anything against Allah. Those are (they) whose hearts Allah is not willing to purify; for them is disgrace in the present (life), (Literally: lowly "life", i.e., the life of this world) and in the Hereafter they will have a tremendous torment
Muhammad Sarwar
Messenger, do not be grieved about the people who run back to disbelief. They only say that they believe but, in fact, they have no faith in their hearts. Some Jews knowingly listen to lies and accept the lies which come from others, (Jews), who have no relation with you and who distort certain words of the Bible and say to the people, "Accept only those words which are the same as what We have told you. If you do not, then beware!" You can not help those whom God wants to try. God does not want to cleanse the hearts of such people. They lead a disgraceful life in this world and in the life hereafter they will suffer a great torment
Muhammad Taqi Usmani
O Messenger, those who race towards disbelief should not be a cause of grief for you, be they from those who say with their mouths, .We believe., while their hearts do not believe, or from those who are (pronounced) Jews. They are listeners to the fallacy, listeners to other people who did not come to you. They distort the words after they had been properly placed. They say, .If you are given this, take it, and if you are not given this, then avoid it. The one whom Allah wills to put to trial, you cannot do anything for him against Allah. They are the ones whose hearts Allah did not intend to purify. For them there is humiliation in this world, and for them there is a great punishment in the Hereafter
Shabbir Ahmed
O Messenger! Let not those grieve you who run to disbelief, saying, "We believe," from their mouths, while their hearts do not believe. And grieve not about those Jews who listen only to fabricate lies. They listen and go to their folk who have never met with you. Then they distort the words out of context and tell others to accept only a part and reject a part. You can do nothing to help those who decide to go astray. Guidance and straying depend upon the Laws of Allah (4:88). Allah does not intervene to purify the hearts of such people. For those who go astray, there is disgrace in this world and an awful punishment in the Hereafter
Dr. Munir Munshey
Oh messenger! Do not let those who rush to reject (the truth) cause you any grief. Among them are those who say, "We believe!" by their tongue, while their hearts do not believe. Among them are (many) Jews who listen solely for the sake of lying (later on). They spy for others who do not come to you. They (misquote you and) change the words out of context. (To their followers) they say, "Accede and accept if you are told such and such, and be weary if you are told anything different." You (Oh Muhammad, SAW) have no authority at all to help the one whom Allah wants to (tempt and) test through an ordeal. They are among those whose hearts Allah has chosen not to cleanse and purify. Disgrace (and defeat) is their lot in this world, and in the life-to-come they shall face the severest (most awful) punishment
Syed Vickar Ahamed
O Messenger (Muhammad)! Do not let those (people) make you sad, (those) who go faster than the others towards disbelief: (Whether it be) among those who say, "We believe", with their lips but whose hearts have no faith; Or it be among the Jews— Men who will listen to any lie— (Men who) will listen even to others who have never even come to you. They change words from their right times and (from their right) places: They say, "If you are given this, take it, but if not, be aware!" If anyone's trial is intended by Allah, you (O Prophet!) have no authority in the least over him to protect from Allah. For such (people) — It is not Allah’s Will to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world, and a severe punishment in the Hereafter
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International)
O Messenger, let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say, "We believe" with their mouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] usages, saying "If you are given this, take it; but if you are not given it, then beware." But he for whom Allah intends fitnah - never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allah . Those are the ones for whom Allah does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment
[The Monotheist Group] (2011 Edition)
O messenger, do not be saddened by those who increase in disbelief from among those who said: "We believe" with their mouths while their hearts did not believe. And from among the Jews, there are those who listened to lies; they listened to people who never came to you; they distort the words from their context, and they Say: "If you are given this, then take it, but if you are given anything different, then beware!" And whoever God wants to test, then you will not posses anything for him against God. These are the ones whose hearts God did not want to cleanse; in this world they will have humiliation, and in the Hereafter they will have a great retribution
Abdel Haleem
Messenger, do not be grieved by those who race to surpass one another in disbelief- those who say with their mouths, ‘We believe,’ but have no faith in their hearts, and the Jews who listen eagerly to lies and to those who have not even met you, who distort the meanings of [revealed] words and say [to each other], ‘If you are given this ruling, accept it, but if you are not, then beware!’––if God intends some people to be so misguided, you will be powerless against God on their behalf. These are the ones whose hearts God does not intend to cleanse- a disgrace for them in this world, and then a heavy punishment in the Hereafter
Abdul Majid Daryabadi
O apostle! let not those grieve thee that hasten after infidelity from among these who say with their mouths: we believe, yet their hearts believe not, and from among those who are Judaised: listeners to falsehoods, listeners to anot her people who come not unto thee; they pervert the words after they have been set in their places, saying: if that which is given you be this accept it, but if that is not given you, beware. And whosesoever temptation Allah Willeth, thou shalt not avail him against Allah in aught. These are they whose hearts Allah would not cleanse; theirs is humiliation in this world and theirs shall be in the Hereafter a mighty torment
Ahmed Ali
Be not grieved, O Apostle, by those who hasten to outrace others in denial, and say with their tongues: "We believe," but do not believe in their hearts. And those of the Jews who listen to tell lies, and spy on behalf of others who do not come to you, and who distort the words (of the Torah) out of context, and say: "If you are given (what we say is true) accept it; but if you are not given it, beware." You cannot intercede with God for him whom God would not show the way. These are the people whose hearts God does not wish to purify. For them is ignominy in this world and punishment untold in the next -
Aisha Bewley
O Messenger! do not be grieved by those who rush headlong into kufr among those who say ´We have iman´ with their tongues when their hearts contain no iman and among the Jews. Those who listen to lies listen to other people who have not come to you, distorting words from their proper meanings, saying, ´If you are given this, then take it. If you are not given it, then beware!´ If Allah desires misguidance for someone, you cannot help him against Allah in any way. Those are the people whose hearts Allah does not want to purify. They will have disgrace in this world and in the Next World they will have a terrible punishment.
Ali Ünal
O Messenger! Let them not grieve you who would rush in unbelief, as if competing with one another in a race, such of them as say with their mouths, "We believe," but their hearts do not believe, and those of them who are Jews. They are eagerly listening out for falsehoods (especially about you) and eagerly listening out (spying) on behalf of other people who have never come to you (even to learn the essence of your Message); altering any words (whether pertaining to God or not) from their contexts to distort their meanings. They say (about matters referred to you for judgment): "If such and such judgment is given to you, accept it; but if it is not given to you, then beware!" Whoever God has willed to put to a trial (to prove his nature, and has failed in this trial), you have no power in anything on his behalf against God. Such are those whose hearts (because of their rushing in unbelief) God does not will to purify. For them is disgrace in the world, and in the Hereafter a tremendous punishment
Ali Quli Qara'i
O Apostle! Do not grieve for those who are active in [promoting] unfaith, such as those who say, ‘We believe’ with their mouths, but whose hearts have no faith, and the Jews who eavesdrop with the aim of [telling] lies [against you] and eavesdrop for other people who do not come to you. They pervert words from their meanings, [and] say, ‘If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given this, beware!’ Yet whomever Allah wishes to mislead, you cannot avail him anything against Allah. They are the ones whose hearts Allah did not desire to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and there is a great punishment for them in the Hereafter
Hamid S. Aziz
O you Messenger! Let not those grieve you who vie with each other in disbelief, be they of those who say with their mouths "We believe," but their heart are faithless; or of those among Jews, listeners to a lie, who listen to other people, but

Messenger, do not be sad by those who race to disbelief among those who said: “We believe” with their lips but their hearts did not believe. And some of the Jews listen to lies, listening to other people who did not come to you, changing the words from their places (and context) saying: “If you are given this (the changed word) then accept it, and if you are not given it then stay away from it.” And whomever God wants to test, then you will never have any power for him against God. They are those whom God does not want to cleanse their hearts, they have disgrace in this world and they will have a great punishment in the Hereafter.
A.L. Bilal Muhammad et al (2018)
O messenger, do not let those grieve you who race each other to disbelief, whether it be among those who say, “We believe,” with their lips, but whose hearts have no faith, or it be among the Jews, some of who will listen to any lie, will listen even to others who have never so much as come to you. They take the words out of context. They say, “If you are given this, take it, but if not, beware.” If for anyone a trial is intended by God, you have no authority in the least for him against God. For them, it is not God's will to redeem their hearts. For them there is disgrace in the present, and in the hereafter a heavy punishment
Musharraf Hussain
Messenger, don’t be saddened by those rushing headlong into disbelief, they say: “We believe,” while there is no belief in their hearts, and likewise some who call themselves Jews. They are listening eagerly to lies and other people who have yet to come to you; they deliberately misquote the verses after the revelation has been laid down, saying, “If you are given this ruling, accept it, but if not, then beware.” If Allah wishes to test anyone, you will have no means to save him from Allah. Allah doesn’t wish to clean their hearts since they don’t want that. They will suffer disgrace in this world, and they will be severely punished in the Hereafter
Maududi
O Messenger! Do not be grieved on account of those who vie with one another in disbelieving: even though they be those who say with their mouths: ´We believe´ even though their hearts have no faith; or they be Jews who have their ears eagerly turned to falsehood and spy for other people who did not chance to come to you, who pervert the words of Allah, taking them out of their proper context in order to distort their meaning

O Messenger! Let not those make you sad, who are quick in suppressing the Truth from among those who say, with their mouths, "We believe" and their hearts do not believe, and from among those who are Jews. They listen to falsehood. They listen to others who do not come to you. They transpose the word after it had been placed in its proper context, saying, "If you are given this, take it, and if you are not given this, beware!" And if Allah wills to put anyone to distress and hardship, you can do nothing for him against Allah. Allah does not want to purify the hearts of such people. Disgrace it is for them in this world, and a grave punishment for them in the Hereafter

And their hearts are not Muslims, and some of the Jews who listen falsehood very well and listen very well to other people who have not come to you. They change the words of Allah from their places, and say, If you get this command, then accept it, and if you get not this, then be on your guard.' And to whom Allah pleases to misguide. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them a grievous chastisement in the Hereafter
Muhammad Ahmed & Samira
You, you the messenger, do not be saddened (by) those who quicken/speed in the disbelief, from those who said: "We believed" with their mouths, and their hearts/minds did not believe, and from those who repented/Jews (who are) often listening/hearing to the lie/falsehood, (and) often listening/hearing to other nations (that) they did not come to you, they alter/distort the words/expressions from after its places, they say: "If you were given that, so take it , and if you were not given it, so be warned ." And whom God wants testing him , so you will never own/possess for him from God a thing, those are those who God did not want that to purify their hearts/minds , for them in the present world (is) shame/scandal/ disgrace, and for them in the end (other life is) a great torture
Bijan Moeinian
O’ My Prophet, do not be upset about those people whose mouths say, “We believe,” but there is no belief in their hearts and, consequently, rush toward the disbelief [and engage in kind of activities which does not please the Lord.] Also, do not be upset about [the attitude of] those Jews who have heard nothing but lies about you. The latter have heard [these lies] from those Jews who have never met you and have presented them a falsified version of your speeches [after all, these are the same people who falsified their own Torah.] They say: “If Mohammad says such and such [to suit their lusts] accept it, otherwise reject it!” You can do nothing to save from God’s punishment a man who has failed the Lord’s trial. They do not deserve that God purify their hearts. They will be humiliated in this world and an awful punishment is waiting for them in the Hereafter
Faridul Haque
O Noble Messenger (Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him)! Do not let yourself be aggrieved by the people who rush towards disbelief - those who say with their mouths, “We believe” but whose hearts are not Muslims; and some Jews; they listen a great deal to falsehood, and to other people who do not come to you; shifting Allah’s Words from their correct places; and say, “If this command is given to you, obey it, but if this is not given to you, then refrain”; and the one whom Allah wills to send astray, you will never be able to help him in the least against Allah; they are those whose hearts Allah did not will to cleanse; for them is disgrace in this world, and for them is a great punishment in the Hereafter
Sher Ali
O Messenger ! let not those grieve thee who hasten to fall into disbelief - those who say with their mouths, `We believe,' but their hearts believe not. And among the Jews too are those who would fondly listen to any lie - who listen for conveying it to other people who have not come to thee. They pervert words after their being put in their right places; and say, `If you are given this, then accept it, but if you are not given this, then keep away from it.' And as for him whom ALLAH desires to try, thou shalt not avail him aught against ALLAH. These are they whose hearts ALLAH has not been pleased to purify; they shall have disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter they shall have a severe punishment
Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri
O Messenger! Those who advance (fast) into disbelief should not grieve you. (Firstly) they include those (hypocrites) who utter from their mouths: ‘We believe,’ whilst their hearts have not accepted faith. (Secondly) amongst them are the Jews. They listen to (you) eagerly to fabricate lies. They (in fact) hear (to spy) for others who have not (yet) come to you. (They are the people) who change the Words (of Allah even) after their contexts (are fixed and) say: ‘If you are given this (command which they like), take it, and if you are not given this (command), then keep off (it).’ And if Allah adjudges someone to go astray, then you do not have any power for him (to hold up the command of) Allah. They are the ones whose hearts Allah has no intention whatsoever to purify. For them there is ignominy (of disbelief) in this world and mighty punishment in the Hereafter
Amatul Rahman Omar
O Messenger! let not those who vie with one another in (- spreading) disbelief,- those of them who say with their mouths, `we believe', but their hearts believe not, and those of them who judaised, grieve you. They are the acceptors of falsehood and are those who listen for conveying to other people who have not yet come to you. They tear the words (of God) from their proper places (and pervert the meanings thereof and) say, `If you are given this (sort of commandment) accept it and if you are not given this, then be careful.' And he (on) whom Allah desires (to inflict) His punishment, you can do nothing to save him from (the punishment of) Allah. It is these whose hearts Allah has not been pleased to purify. Ignominy is their lot in this world, and there awaits them in the Hereafter a great punishment
Muhsin Khan & Muhammad al-Hilali
O Messenger (Muhammad SAW)! Let not those who hurry to fall into disbelief grieve you, of such who say: "We believe" with their mouths but their hearts have no faith. And of the Jews are men who listen much and eagerly to lies - listen to others who have not come to you. They change the words from their places; they say, "If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given this, then beware!" And whomsoever Allah wants to put in AlFitnah (error, because of his rejecting the Faith), you can do nothing for him against Allah. Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not want to purify (from disbelief and hypocrisy); for them there is a disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a great torment

Arthur John Arberry
O Messenger, let them not grieve thee that vie with one another in unbelief, such men as say with their mouths 'We believe' but their hearts believe not; and the Jews who listen to falsehood, listen to other folk, who have not come to thee, perverting words from their meanings, saying, 'If you are given this, then take it; if you are not given it, beware!' Whomsoever God desires to try, thou canst not avail him anything with God. Those are they whose hearts God desired not to purify; for them is degradation in this world; and in the world to come awaits them a mighty chastisement
George Sale
O apostle, let not them grieve thee, who hasten to infidelity, either of those who say, we believe, with their mouths, but whose hearts believe not; or of the Jews, who hearken to a lie, and hearken to other people; who come not unto thee: They pervert the words of the law from their true places, and say, if this be brought unto you, receive it; but if it be not brought unto you, beware of receiving ought else; and in behalf of him whom God shall resolve to seduce , thou shalt not prevail with God at all. They whose hearts God shall not please to cleanse, shall suffer shame in this world, and a grievous punishment in the next
Edward Henry Palmer
O thou Apostle! let not those grieve thee who vie in misbelief; or those who say with their mouths 'We believe,' but their hearts do not believe; or of those who are Jews, listeners to a lie, - listeners to other people, but who come not to thee. They pervert the words from their places and say, ' If this is what ye are given, take it; but if ye are not given it, then beware!' but he whom God wishes to mislead, thou canst do nothing with God for him; these are those whose hearts God wishes not to purify, for them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the next is mighty woe,
John Medows Rodwell
O Apostle! let not those who vie with one another in speeding to infidelity vex thee; - of those who say with their mouths, "We believe," but whose hearts believe not; - or of the Jews listeners to a lie-listeners to others - but who come not to thee. They shift the words of the law from their places, and say, "If this be brought to you, receive it; but if this be not brought to you, then beware of it." For him whom God would mislead, thou canst in no wise prevail with God! They whose hearts God shall not please to cleanse, shall suffer disgrace in this world, and in the next a grievous punishment
N J Dawood (2014)
Apostle, do not grieve for those who plunge headlong into unbelief; those who say with their mouths: ‘We believe,‘ but have no faith in their hearts, and those of the Jewish Faith who avidly listen to lies and avidly listen to others who have not come to you. They tamper with words out of their context and say: ‘If such-and-such be given you, accept it; if it be not given you, beware!‘ You cannot help a man if God intends to try him. Those whose hearts God does not intend to purify shall be held up to shame in this world, and in the world to come grievous punishment awaits them

Fode Drame
O you the messenger! Let not those who hasten to disbelief aggrieve you from among those who say, “We believe” with their mouths but their hearts did not believe and from among those who have adhered to Judaism. Often keenly listening to the lie, often listening to other people who have not come to you. They bias the word from after its right disposition. They say, “If you are given this then take it but if you are not given it then beware” and whoever Allah intends to try with His tribulation, then you will never prevail with Allah in aught for him. Those are the ones whom Allah has not intended to purify their hearts. There is ignominy for them in [the life of] this world and there will be for them in the hereafter a punishment most awful.
Munir Mezyed
O’ Messenger, do not let those who hasten towards spiritual darkness distress you- those who say: ‘We adhere to Faith’ with their tongues, but their hearts are not convinced because of the veracity of their faith. And of the Jews who listen to mendacity, paying close attention to other folk who are too arrogant to come to you, distorting the words out of their genuine context, and saying: ‘If you are given this, then you must take it, but if you are not given this, then you must beware!’ Whosoever Allâh lets him fall into temptation, you will never have (the power to save) him from (the punishment) of Allâh. Those are the ones whose hearts Allâh does not intend to purify. For them is ignominy in this worldly life, as well as an extremely dreadful doom in the Hereafter.
Sahib Mustaqim Bleher
Oh messenger, let not those sadden you who are quick to reject (the truth) amongst those who say we believe with their mouths whilst their hearts do not believe and of those amongst the Jews who listen to lies and listen to other people who have not come to you, twisting the meaning of words and saying: if you get this, then take it, and if you don´t get it, then be wary, and whomever Allah wills to tempt, you will not have control over anything for him regarding Allah. Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not will to purify; disgrace is theirs in this world and in the hereafter immense punishment awaits them.
Linda “iLHam” Barto
O Messenger, do not grieve over those who race each other in unbelief. [That includes] those who say, “We believe,” with their mouths but whose hearts have no faith. [That includes certain] Jews who will listen to any lie and even to those who don’t even know you. They take words out of context and say, “If you are given this [revelation], then you can have it! If not, beware!” If anyone’s test [of faith] is intended by Allah, you have no authority in the least for his/her sake against Allah. For such people, Allah’s will is not to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world. In the hereafter is a profound punishment.
Fadel Soliman, Bridges‘ Translation
O Messenger, do not be saddened by those who hasten towards denial from among those who said with their mouths, “We believe," but whose hearts have not attained faith, and of the ones who have Judaized—they are constant listeners to lies; they are constant listeners to other people who have not come to you; they distort the words out of their context, saying, “If youpl are given this, then take it; but if you are not given it, then beware.” And whomever Allah wants to put to trial, yousg will be powerless against Allah on his behalf. Those are the ones whose hearts Allah did not want to cleanse. For them is disgrace in the Earlier (Life), and for them is a great punishment in the Hereafter.
Irving & Mohamed Hegab
O Messenger, do not let those who rush off into disbelief worry you, such as those who say: "We believe" with their mouths, while their hearts do not believe. Some of those are Jews who are listening to lies, listening for other folk who do not come to you. They lift words (Torah’ rules) out of their context, saying: "If you are given [like] this (distorted rules), then take it; while if you are not given it, then watch out!" Allah (God) will never let you control someone whom Allah (God) wants to misguide in any way; those are the ones whose hearts Allah (God) does not want to purify. They will have disgrace in this world, while in the Hereafter they will have terrible punishment,
Samy Mahdy
O Messenger! Do not grieve you, those who are hastening in infidelity among those who said with their mouths, “We believed,” and their cores did not believe; and among the Jews, who are listening to the lies, listening to another kinfolk who did not come to you. They interpolate the words from after its positioning, they say, “If you are given this, so take it; and if you are not given it, so be cautious.” And whoever Allah has wanted, his infatuation, so you will not own a thing for him from Allah. Those are the ones whom Allah does not want to purify their cores. For them is a disgrace in the Dunya (world), and for them is in the hereafter a great torment.
Sayyid Qutb
Messenger, be not grieved by those who plunge headlong into unbelief; such as those who say with their mouths, “We believe”, while their hearts do not believe. Among the Jews are some who eagerly listen to falsehood, eagerly listen to other people who have not come to you. They tamper with words out of their context, and say, “If such-and-such [a precept] is given you, accept it; but if you are not given it, then be on your guard.” If God wants to put anyone to test, you shall not be able to avail him anything against God. Such are the ones whose hearts God is not willing to purify. They will have disgrace in this world, and awesome suffering in the life to come.
Ahmed Hulusi
O Rasul! Do not be grieved by those who say “We have believed” with their tongues while they have not believed with their hearts (consciously, by internalizing and experiencing its meaning) and who compete in denial... There are some among the Jews who listen to you to make lies, or as mediators on behalf of people who do not come to you... They pervert the meanings of the words and say, “If this be given to you, take it, but if not (if instead, a judgment is made based on Allah’s laws) then stay away”... If Allah wills corruption for someone, you can no longer expect anything from Allah on his behalf... They are the ones whose hearts Allah does not wish to purify... There is disgrace for them in the world... And a severe suffering awaits them in the eternal life to come.
Sayyed Abbas Sadr-Ameli
O' Messenger! Let not those who hasten in infidelity grieve you, from among those who (hypocritically) say with their mouths: ' We believe ', but their hearts do not believe, and from among those of the jews who listen for (the sake of) lying, listen (with a spy manner) for other people who have not come to you. They distort the (heavenly) words from their places, saying: ' If you are given this, take it, and if you are not given this, beware! (be aloof) '; and whomever Allah desires to punish, you cannot avail him anything with Allah. Those are they whose hearts Allah does not desire to purify; there is a degraolation for them in the world, and in the Hereafter, they will have a grievous chastisement
Al-muntakhab fi tafsir al-Qur‘an al-Karim
O you, the Messenger: "Let not those hypocrites who impel themselves heedlessly to infidelity grieve you at heart; their words and thoughts do not together accord. They declare they have conformed to Islam when in fact their hearts entertain positive unbelief. Nor should you grieve over those of the Jews who are attentive hearers to falsehood which the demagogic rabbins had purposed that they know. Furthermore, they lend their ears to those among them who never had audience of you, who translocation the words of the Sacred Scriptures to alter the intended sense of Allah’s words, and they use their authority to instruct their listeners to accept only the Scriptural passages they discoursed them, and to reject and beware of all else. But the fact is that he whom Allah has justly intended to close his heart’s ears and his mind’s eyes; you shall not be able to provide him with an alternative of Allah’s decision. These and such persons are they whom Allah has declined to cleanse their hearts and minds from moral and spiritual defilement. They must expect disgrace and humiliation here below, and unremitting punishment hereafter
Mir Aneesuddin
O messenger ! do not let those persons grieve you, who rush towards infidelity from among those who say with their mouths, "We believe," but their hearts do not believe and from those who are Jews, listeners of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other people who have not come to you, they alter the words after (knowing) their proper places, saying, "If you are given this then take it and if you are not given this then be cautious." And for him, whose trial Allah intends, you will never have any power for him against Allah, those are the persons for whom Allah does not intend to clean their hearts. For them there is disgrace in the world and there is a great punishment for them in the hereafter.

Yusuf Ali (Orig. 1938)
O Apostle! let not those grieve thee, who race each other into unbelief: (whether it be) among those who say "We believe" with their lips but whose hearts have no faith; or it be among the Jews,- men who will listen to any lie,- will listen even to others who have never so much as come to thee. They change the words from their (right) times and places: they say, "If ye are given this, take it, but if not, beware!" If any one's trial is intended by God, thou hast no authority in the least for him against God. For such - it is not God's will to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a heavy punishment
OLD Literal Word for Word
O Messenger! Let not grieve you those who hasten in (to) [the] disbelief - of those who said, "We believe" with their mouths and not believe their hearts, and from those who (are) Jews. They (are) listeners to falsehood, (and) listeners for other people (who have) not come to you. They distort the words [after] (from) their context, saying, "If you are given this [so] take it but if you are not given it then beware." And (for) whom Allah intends his trial, then never will you have power for him against Allah anything. Those (are) the ones never will Allah intend that He purifies their hearts. For them in the world (is) disgrace and for them in the Hereafter (is) a punishment great
