| | John Medows Rodwell rendition of Surah The Mount, The Mountain(at-Tur) --- |
---|
52:1 | | BY the MOUNTAIN |
52:2 | | And by the Book writte |
52:3 | | On an outspread roll |
52:4 | | And by the frequented fane |
52:5 | | And by the lofty vault |
52:6 | | And by the swollen sea |
52:7 | | Verily, a chastisement from thy Lord is imminent |
52:8 | | And none shall put it back |
52:9 | | Reeling on that day the Heaven shall reel |
52:10 | | And stirring shall the mountains stir |
52:11 | | And woe, on that day, to those who called the apostles liars |
52:12 | | Who plunged for pastime into vain disputes |
52:13 | | On that day shall they be thrust with thrusting to the fire of Hell: |
52:14 | | "This is the fire which ye treated as a lie |
52:15 | | What! is this magic, then? or, do ye not see it |
52:16 | | Burn ye therein: bear it patiently or impatiently 'twill be the same to you: for ye shall assuredly receive the reward of your doings." |
52:17 | | But mid gardens and delights shall they dwell who have feared God |
52:18 | | Rejoicing in what their Lord hath given them; and that from the pain of hell-fire hath their Lord preserved them |
52:19 | | "Eat and drink with healthy enjoyment, in recompense for your deeds." |
52:20 | | On couches ranged in rows shall they recline; and to the damsels with large dark eyes will we wed them |
52:21 | | And to those who have believed, whose offspring have followed them in the faith, will we again unite their offspring; nor of the meed of their works will we in the least defraud them. Pledged to God is every man for his actions and their desert |
52:22 | | And fruits in abundance will we give them, and flesh as they shall desire |
52:23 | | Therein shall they pass to one another the cup which shall engender no light discourse, no motive to sin |
52:24 | | And youths shall go round among them beautiful as imbedded pearls |
52:25 | | And shall accost one another and ask mutual questions |
52:26 | | "A time indeed there was," will they say, "when we were full of care as to the future lot of our families |
52:27 | | But kind hath God been to us, and from the pestilential torment hath he preserved us |
52:28 | | For, heretofore we called upon Him - and He is the Beneficent, the Merciful." |
52:29 | | Warn thou, then. For thou by the favour of thy Lord art neither soothsayer nor possessed |
52:30 | | Will they say, "A poet! let us await some adverse turn of his fortune?" |
52:31 | | SAY, wait ye, and in sooth I too will wait with you |
52:32 | | Is it their dreams which inspire them with this? or is it that they are a perverse people |
52:33 | | Will they say, "He hath forged it (the Koran) himself?" Nay, rather it is that they believed not |
52:34 | | Let them then produce a discourse like it, if they speak the Truth |
52:35 | | Were they created by nothing? or were they the creators of themselves |
52:36 | | Created they the Heavens and Earth? Nay, rather, they have no faith |
52:37 | | Hold they thy Lord's treasures? Bear they the rule supreme |
52:38 | | Have they a ladder for hearing the angels? Let any one who hath heard them bring a clear proof of it |
52:39 | | Hath God daughters and ye sons |
52:40 | | Asketh thou pay of them? they are themselves weighed down with debts |
52:41 | | Have they such a knowledge of the secret things that they can write them down |
52:42 | | Desire they to lay snares for thee? But the snared ones shall be they who do not believe |
52:43 | | Have they any God beside God? Glory be to God above what they join with Him |
52:44 | | And should they see a fragment of the heaven falling down, they would say, "It is only a dense cloud." |
52:45 | | Leave them then until they come face to face with the day when they shall swoon away |
52:46 | | A day in which their snares shall not at all avail them, neither shall they be helped |
52:47 | | And verily, beside this is there a punishment for the evildoers: but most of them know it not |
52:48 | | Wait thou patiently the judgment of thy Lord, for thou art in our eye; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord when thou risest up |
52:49 | | And in the night-season: Praise him when the stars are setting |
