| | John Medows Rodwell rendition of Surah The Winnowing Winds, The Scatterers(adh-Dhariyat) --- |
---|
51:1 | | By the clouds which scatter with SCATTERING |
51:2 | | And those which bear their load |
51:3 | | And by those which speed lightly along |
51:4 | | And those which apportion by command |
51:5 | | True, indeed, is that with which ye are threatened |
51:6 | | And lo! the judgment will surely come |
51:7 | | By the star-tracked heaven |
51:8 | | Ye are discordant in what ye say |
51:9 | | But whose turneth him from the truth, is turned from it by a divine decree |
51:10 | | Perish the liars |
51:11 | | Who are bewildered in the depths of ignorance |
51:12 | | They ask, "When this day of judgment?" |
51:13 | | On that day they shall be tormented at the fire |
51:14 | | "Taste ye of this your torment, whose speedy coming ye challenged." |
51:15 | | But the God-fearing shall dwell amid gardens and fountains |
51:16 | | Enjoying what their Lord hath given them, because, aforetime they were well-doers |
51:17 | | But little of the night was it that they slept |
51:18 | | And at dawn they prayed for pardon |
51:19 | | And gave due share of their wealth to the suppliant and the outcast |
51:20 | | On Earth are signs for men of firm belief |
51:21 | | And also in your own selves: Will ye not then behold them |
51:22 | | The Heaven hath sustenance for you, and it containeth that which you are promised |
51:23 | | By the Lord then of the heaven and of the earth, I swear that this is the truth, even as ye speak yourselves |
51:24 | | Hath the story reached thee of Abraham's honoured guests |
51:25 | | When they went in unto him and said, "Peace!" he replied, "Peace: - they are strangers." |
51:26 | | And he went apart to his family, and brought a fatted calf |
51:27 | | And set it before them. He said, "Eat ye not?" |
51:28 | | And he conceived a fear of them. They said to him, "Fear not;" and announced to him a wise son |
51:29 | | His wife came up with outcry: she smote her face and said, "What I, old and barren!" |
51:30 | | They said, "Thus saith thy Lord. He truly is the Wise, the Knowing." |
51:31 | | Said he, "And what, O messengers, is your errand?" |
51:32 | | They said, "To a wicked people are we sent |
51:33 | | To hurl upon them stones of clay |
51:34 | | Destined by thy Lord for men guilty of excesses." |
51:35 | | And we brought forth the believers who were in the city |
51:36 | | But we found not in it but one family of Muslims |
51:37 | | And signs we left in it for those who dread the afflictive chastisement, |
51:38 | | And in Moses: when we sent him to Pharaoh with manifest power |
51:39 | | But relying on his forces he turned his back and said, "Sorcerer, or Possessed." |
51:40 | | So we seized him and his hosts and cast them into the sea; for of all blame was he worthy |
51:41 | | And in Ad: when we sent against them the desolating blast |
51:42 | | It touched not aught over which it came, but it turned it to dust |
51:43 | | And in Themoud: when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for yet a while." |
51:44 | | But they rebelled against their Lord's command: so the tempest took them as they watched its coming |
51:45 | | They were not able to stand upright, and could not help themselves |
51:46 | | And we destroyed the people of Noah, before them; for an impious people were they |
51:47 | | And the Heaven - with our hands have we built it up, and given it its expanse |
51:48 | | And the Earth - we have stretched it out like a carpet; and how smoothly have we spread it forth |
51:49 | | And of everything have we created pairs: that haply ye may reflect |
51:50 | | Fly then to God: I come to you from him a plain warner |
51:51 | | And set not up another god with God: I come to you from him a plain warner |
51:52 | | Even thus came there no apostle to those who flourished before them, but they exclaimed, "Sorcerer, or Possessed." |
51:53 | | Have they made a legacy to one another of this scoff? Yes, they are a rebel people |
51:54 | | Turn away, then, from them, and thou shalt not incur reproach |
51:55 | | Yet warn them, for, in truth, warning will profit the believers |
51:56 | | I have not created Djinn and men, but that they should worship me |
51:57 | | I require not sustenance from them, neither require I that they feed me |
51:58 | | Verily, God is the sole sustainer: possessed of might: the unshaken |
51:59 | | Therefore to those who injure thee shall be a fate like the fate of their fellows of old. Let them not challenge me to hasten it |
51:60 | | Woe then to the infidels, because of their threatened day |
