| | Aisha Bewley rendition of Surah The Poets(ash-Shu`ara`) --- |
---|
26:1 | | Ta Sin Mim. |
26:2 | | Those are the Signs of the Clear Book. |
26:3 | | Perhaps you will destroy yourself with grief because they will not become muminun. |
26:4 | | If We wished We could send down a Sign to them from heaven, before which their heads would be bowed low in subjection. |
26:5 | | But no fresh reminder from the All-Merciful reaches them without their turning away from it. |
26:6 | | They have denied the truth, but the news of what they mocked will certainly come to them. |
26:7 | | Have they not looked at the earth and seen how We have made every sort of beneficial species grow in it? |
26:8 | | There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:9 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:10 | | When your Lord called out to Musa: ´Go to the wrongdoing people, |
26:11 | | the people of Pharaoh. Will they not have taqwa?´ |
26:12 | | He said, ´My Lord, I fear they will deny me |
26:13 | | and that my breast will be constricted and that my tongue will not be free, so send Harun as a Messenger as well. |
26:14 | | They hold a wrong action against me and I fear that they may kill me.´ |
26:15 | | He said, ´By no means! Go, both of you, with Our Signs. We will certainly be together with you, listening. |
26:16 | | Go to Pharaoh and say, "We are the Messenger of the Lord of all the worlds |
26:17 | | to tell you to send the tribe of Israel away with us."´ |
26:18 | | He said, ´Did we not bring you up among us as a child and did you not spend many years of your life among us? |
26:19 | | Yet you did the deed you did and were ungrateful.´ |
26:20 | | He said, ´At the time I did it I was one of the misguided |
26:21 | | and so I fled from you when I was in fear of you but my Lord gave me right judgement and made me one of the Messengers. |
26:22 | | And anyway you can only reproach me with this favour because you made the tribe of Israel into slaves!´ |
26:23 | | Pharaoh said, ´What is the Lord of all the worlds?´ |
26:24 | | He said, ´The Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them if you knew for sure.´ |
26:25 | | He said to those around him, ´Are you listening?´ |
26:26 | | He said, ´Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers, the previous peoples.´ |
26:27 | | He said, ´This Messenger, who has been sent to you, is mad.´ |
26:28 | | He said, ´The Lord of the East and the West and everything between them if you used your intellect.´ |
26:29 | | He said, ´If you take any god other than me, I will certainly throw you into prison.´ |
26:30 | | He said, ´Even if I were to bring you something undeniable?´ |
26:31 | | He said, ´Produce it then if you are someone telling the truth.´ |
26:32 | | So He threw down his staff and there it was, unmistakably a snake. |
26:33 | | And he drew out his hand and there it was, pure white to those who looked. |
26:34 | | He said to the High Council round about him, ´This certainly is a skilled magician |
26:35 | | who desires by his magic to expel you from your land, so what do you recommend?´ |
26:36 | | They said, ´Detain him and his brother and send out marshals to the cities, |
26:37 | | to bring you all the skilled magicians.´ |
26:38 | | So the magicians were assembled for a meeting on a specified day. |
26:39 | | The people were asked, ´Are you all assembled? |
26:40 | | so we can follow the magicians if they are the winners?´ |
26:41 | | When the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, ´Will we be rewarded if we are the winners?´ |
26:42 | | He said, ´Yes, and in that case you will be among those brought near.´ |
26:43 | | Musa said to them, ´Throw whatever it is you are going to throw!´ |
26:44 | | They threw down their ropes and staffs and said, ´By the might of Pharaoh we are the winners.´ |
26:45 | | But Musa threw down his staff and at once it swallowed up what they had fabricated. |
26:46 | | The magicians threw themselves down, prostrating. |
26:47 | | They said, ´We have iman in the Lord of all the worlds, |
26:48 | | the Lord of Musa and Harun.´ |
26:49 | | He said, ´Have you had iman in him before I authorised you? He is your chief who taught you magic. But you will soon know! I will cut off your alternate hands and feet and I will crucify every one of you.´ |
26:50 | | They said, ´We do not care! We are returning to our Lord. |
26:51 | | We remain hopeful that our Lord will forgive us our mistakes for being the first of the muminun.´ |
26:52 | | We revealed to Musa: ´Travel with Our slaves by night. You will certainly be pursued.´ |
26:53 | | Pharaoh sent marshals into the cities: |
26:54 | | ´These people are a small group |
26:55 | | and we find them irritating |
26:56 | | and we constitute a vigilant majority.´ |
26:57 | | We expelled them from gardens and springs, |
26:58 | | from treasures and a splendid situation. |
26:59 | | So it was! And We bequeathed them to the tribe of Israel. |
26:60 | | So they pursued them towards the east. |
26:61 | | And when the two hosts came into sight of one another Musa´s companions said, ´We will surely be overtaken!´ |
26:62 | | He said, ´Never! My Lord is with me and He will guide me.´ |
26:63 | | So We revealed to Musa, ´Strike the sea with your staff.´ And it split in two, each part like a towering cliff. |
26:64 | | And We brought the others right up to it. |
26:65 | | We rescued Musa and all those who were with him. |
26:66 | | Then We drowned the rest. |
26:67 | | There is certainly a Sign in that yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:68 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:69 | | Recite to them the story of Ibrahim |
26:70 | | when he said to his father and his people, ´What do you worship?´ |
26:71 | | They said, ´We worship idols and will continue to cling to them.´ |
26:72 | | He said, ´Do they hear you when you call |
26:73 | | or do they help you or do you harm?´ |
26:74 | | They said, ´No, but this is what we found our fathers doing.´ |
26:75 | | He said, ´Have you really thought about what you worship, |
26:76 | | you and your fathers who came before? |
26:77 | | They are all my enemies except for the Lord of all the worlds: |
26:78 | | He who created me and guides me; |
26:79 | | He who gives me food and gives me drink; |
26:80 | | and when I am ill, it is He who heals me; |
26:81 | | He who will cause my death, then give me life; |
26:82 | | He who I sincerely hope will forgive my mistakes on the Day of Reckoning. |
26:83 | | My Lord, give me right judgement and unite me with the righteous; |
26:84 | | and make me highly esteemed among the later peoples; |
26:85 | | and make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Delight; |
26:86 | | and forgive my father he was one of the misguided; |
26:87 | | and do not disgrace me on the Day they are raised up, |
26:88 | | the Day when neither wealth nor sons will be of any use |
26:89 | | except to those who come to Allah with sound and flawless hearts.´ |
26:90 | | The Garden will be brought near to those who have taqwa. |
26:91 | | The Blazing Fire will be displayed to the misled. |
26:92 | | They will be asked, ´Where are those you used to worship besides Allah? |
26:93 | | Can they help you or even help themselves?´ |
26:94 | | They will be bundled into it head first, they and the misled, |
26:95 | | and every one of Iblis´s regiments. |
26:96 | | Arguing in it with one another, they will say, |
26:97 | | ´By Allah, we were plainly misguided |
26:98 | | when We equated you with the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:99 | | It was only the evildoers who misguided us |
26:100 | | and now we have no one to intercede for us; |
26:101 | | we do not have a single loyal friend. |
26:102 | | If only we could have another chance then we would be among the muminun!´ |
26:103 | | There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:104 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:105 | | The people of Nuh denied the Messengers. |
26:106 | | When their brother Nuh said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa? |
26:107 | | I am a faithful Messenger to you |
26:108 | | so have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:109 | | I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:110 | | so have taqwa of Allah and obey me.´ |
26:111 | | they said, ´Why should we believe you when the vilest people follow you?´ |
26:112 | | He said, ´What do I know about what they have been doing? |
26:113 | | Their reckoning is the concern of my Lord alone if you were but aware. |
26:114 | | I am not going to chase away the muminun. |
26:115 | | I am only a clear warner.´ |
26:116 | | They said, ´Nuh, if you do not desist you will be stoned.´ |
26:117 | | He said, ´My Lord, my people have denied me |
26:118 | | so make a clear judgement between me and them and rescue me and the muminun who are with me.´ |
26:119 | | So We rescued him and those with him in the loaded ship. |
26:120 | | Then afterwards We drowned the rest. |
26:121 | | There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:122 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:123 | | ´Ad denied the Messengers |
26:124 | | when their brother Hud said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa? |
26:125 | | I am a faithful Messenger to you |
26:126 | | so have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:127 | | I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:128 | | Do you build a tower on every hilltop, just to amuse yourselves, |
26:129 | | and construct great fortresses, hoping to live for ever, |
26:130 | | and when you attack, attack as tyrants do? |
26:131 | | So have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:132 | | Have taqwa of Him who has supplied you with what you know, |
26:133 | | supplied you with livestock and children |
26:134 | | and gardens and clear springs. |
26:135 | | I fear for you the punishment of a terrible Day.´ |
26:136 | | They said, ´It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach. |
26:137 | | This is only what the previous peoples did. |
26:138 | | We are not going to be punished.´ |
26:139 | | So they denied him and We destroyed them. There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:140 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:141 | | Thamud denied the Messengers, |
26:142 | | when their brother Salih said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa? |
26:143 | | I am a faithful Messenger to you |
26:144 | | so have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:145 | | I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:146 | | Are you going to be left secure amid what is here, |
26:147 | | amid gardens and clear springs, |
26:148 | | and cultivated fields and palms with supple spathes? |
26:149 | | Will you continue hewing houses from the mountains with exultant skill? |
26:150 | | So have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:151 | | Do not obey the orders of the profligate, |
26:152 | | those who corrupt the earth and do not put things right.´ |
26:153 | | They said, ´You are merely someone bewitched. |
26:154 | | You are nothing but a human being like ourselves, so produce a Sign if you are telling the truth.´ |
26:155 | | He said, ´Here is a she-camel. She has a time for drinking and you have a time for drinking on specified days. |
26:156 | | Do not do anything to harm her or the punishment of a terrible day will come down on you.´ |
26:157 | | But they hamstrung her and woke up full of remorse, |
26:158 | | for the punishment did come down them. There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:159 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:160 | | The people of Lut denied the Messengers, |
26:161 | | when their brother Lut said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa? |
26:162 | | I am a faithful Messenger to you. |
26:163 | | so have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:164 | | I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:165 | | Of all beings, do you lie with males, |
26:166 | | leaving the wives Allah has created for you? You are a people who have overstepped the limits.´ |
26:167 | | They said, ´Lut, if you do not desist you will be expelled.´ |
26:168 | | He said, ´I am someone who detests the deed you perpetrate. |
26:169 | | My Lord, rescue me and my family from what they are doing.´ |
26:170 | | Therefore We rescued him and all his family |
26:171 | | except for an old woman who remained behind. |
26:172 | | Then We utterly destroyed the rest |
26:173 | | and made a Rain come pouring down upon them. How evil is the rain of those who are warned! |
26:174 | | There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:175 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:176 | | The Companions of the Thicket denied the Messengers, |
26:177 | | when Shu´ayb said to them, ´Will you not have taqwa? |
26:178 | | I am a faithful Messenger to you. |
26:179 | | so have taqwa of Allah and obey me. |
26:180 | | I do not ask you for any wage for it. My wage is the responsibility of no one but the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:181 | | Give full measure. Do not skimp. |
26:182 | | Weigh with a level balance. |
26:183 | | Do not diminish people´s goods and do not go about the earth, corrupting it. |
26:184 | | Have taqwa of Him who created you and the earlier creatures.´ |
26:185 | | They said, ´You are merely someone bewitched. |
26:186 | | You are nothing but a human being like ourselves. We think you are a liar. |
26:187 | | So make lumps from heaven fall down on us if you are telling the truth.´ |
26:188 | | He said, ´My Lord knows best what you are doing.´ |
26:189 | | They denied him and the punishment of the Day of Shadow came down on them. It was indeed the punishment of a terrible Day. |
26:190 | | There is certainly a Sign in that, yet most of them are not muminun. |
26:191 | | Truly your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. |
26:192 | | Truly it is revelation sent down by the Lord of all the worlds. |
26:193 | | The Faithful Ruh brought it down |
26:194 | | to your heart so you would be one of the Warners |
26:195 | | in a clear Arabic tongue. |
26:196 | | It is certainly in the scriptures of the previous peoples. |
26:197 | | Is it not indeed a Sign for them that the scholars of the tribe of Israel have knowledge of it? |
26:198 | | If We had sent it down to a non-Arab |
26:199 | | who had then recited it to them, they still would not have iman in it. |
26:200 | | That is how We thread it into the hearts of the evildoers. |
26:201 | | They will not have iman in it until they see the painful punishment. |
26:202 | | It will come upon them suddenly when they are not expecting it. |
26:203 | | They will say, ´Can we be granted a reprieve?´ |
26:204 | | Do they want to hasten Our punishment? |
26:205 | | Do you think, if We let them enjoy themselves for years |
26:206 | | and then what they were promised comes to them, |
26:207 | | that what they enjoyed will be of any use to them? |
26:208 | | We have never destroyed a city without giving it prior warning |
26:209 | | as a reminder. We were never unjust. |
26:210 | | The shaytans did not bring it down. |
26:211 | | It does not befit them and they are not capable of it. |
26:212 | | They are debarred from hearing it. |
26:213 | | So do not call on any other god along with Allah or you will be among those who will be punished. |
26:214 | | Warn your near relatives. |
26:215 | | and take the muminun who follow you under your wing. |
26:216 | | If they disobey you, say, ´I am free of what you do.´ |
26:217 | | Put your trust in the Almighty, the Most Merciful, |
26:218 | | He who sees you when you stand up to pray |
26:219 | | and your movements with those who prostrate. |
26:220 | | He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. |
26:221 | | Shall I tell you upon whom the shaytans descend? |
26:222 | | They descend on every evil liar. |
26:223 | | They give them a hearing and most of them are liars. |
26:224 | | And as for poets, it is the misled who follow them. |
26:225 | | Do you not see how they ramble on in every style |
26:226 | | and say things which they do not do, |
26:227 | | except those who have iman and do right actions and remember Allah repeatedly and defend themselves after they have been wronged? Those who do wrong will soon know the kind of reversal they will receive! |
