3. Do not promise to pay someone else's debt.
Be not thou among those striking hands, Among sureties [for] burdens.
Do not be among those who make promises and put themselves up as trust for what others owe.
Do not be a person to guarantee someone else’s loan or put up collateral for the debts of an acquaintance;
Unless you have the extra cash on hand, don’t countersign a note. Why risk everything you own? They’ll even take your bed!
Do not be one of those who give pledges and become surety for another’s debts.
Do not be among those who strike hands in pledge, Among those who become guarantors for debts.
Be not thou one of them that strike hands or of them that are sureties for debts.

Don’t gamble on the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, pawning your house against a lucky chance. The time will come when you have to pay up; you’ll be left with nothing but the shirt on your back.
