The Lord says, ‘Some of you will remember how beautiful my temple was in past times. Look at it now! It seems nothing like it was before.

“‘Who among you can remember the Temple as it was before? How glorious it was! In comparison, it is nothing now, is it?

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the Word of God came through the prophet Haggai: “Tell Governor Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and High Priest Joshua son of Jehozadak and all the people: ‘Is there anyone here who saw the Temple the way it used to be, all glorious? And what do you see now? Not much, right?

‘“Who among you is left that saw this house in its former glory? And how does it look to you now? It seems like nothing to you, doesn’t it?
Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing?
Who is left among you that saw this Beis [Hamikdash] in her kavod harishon? And how do ye see it now? In comparison to it, is it not in your eyes as nothing?
Ask them, ‘Is there anyone among the faithful few who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem like nothing to you?’
Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not, in your eyes, as nothing in comparison?
‘How many of you people look at this Temple and try to compare it to the beautiful Temple that was destroyed? What do you think? Does this Temple seem like nothing when you compare it with the first Temple?
‘Do any of you who are still alive remember how beautiful the Temple was before it was destroyed? What does it look like now? The truth is it means nothing to you!’
