And over them all is the king. Oh, for a king who is devoted to his country! Only he can bring order from this chaos.
One who is covetous will never be satisfied with money, nor will the lover of wealth be content with gain. This too is vanity.
But the advantage of the land in everything is this—a king committed to a cultivated field.
And there is higher authority in all of the things of the earth, but he who serves the field is king.
The profit from the land is taken by all; the king is served by the field.
Moreover, the profit of the earth is for all; the king himself is served by the field and in all, a king is an advantage to a land with cultivated fields.
The wealth of the country is divided up among them all. Even the king makes sure he gets his share of the profits.
Don’t be too upset when you see the poor kicked around, and justice and right violated all over the place. Exploitation filters down from one petty official to another. There’s no end to it, and nothing can be done about it. But the good earth doesn’t cheat anyone—even a bad king is honestly served by a field.
All officials take their cut of the profit from the land; even the king benefits from the fields.
But all things considered, this is an advantage for a land: a king for a plowed field.
Even a king depends on the harvest.
and furthermore the king of all (the) earth commandeth to the servant. (and ultimately the King of all the earth commandeth to all his servants.)
