So I turned in despair from hard work as the answer to my search for satisfaction. For though I spend my life searching for wisdom, knowledge, and skill, I must leave all of it to someone who hasn’t done a day’s work in his life; he inherits all my efforts, free of charge. This is not only foolish but unfair. So what does a man get for all his hard work? Days full of sorrow and grief, and restless, bitter nights. It is all utterly ridiculous.
His days are filled with pain and his labors are filled with stress. Even at night he has no peace of mind. This also is vanity.
Because all his days his endeavor is painful and vexing; even at night his heart does not lie down. This too is vanity.

That’s when I called it quits, gave up on anything that could be hoped for on this earth. What’s the point of working your fingers to the bone if you hand over what you worked for to someone who never lifted a finger for it? Smoke, that’s what it is. A bad business from start to finish. So what do you get from a life of hard labor? Pain and grief from dawn to dusk. Never a decent night’s rest. Nothing but smoke.
Pain fills all his days. His occupation is frustration. Even at night his heart does not rest. This too is vapor.

As long as you live, everything you do brings nothing but worry and heartache. Even at night your mind can't rest. It is all useless.
