If the governor hears about it, we'll stand up for you so you won't get in trouble."

"And if this," they added, "is reported to the Governor, we will satisfy him and screen you from punishment."
If this comes to the governor's ears, we will persuade him and make you free of worry."
If the Roman ruler Pilate hears about this, we will explain things to him. Do not be afraid. He will not punish you.’
and if this be heard by the governor, we will persuade him, and you keep free from anxiety.'
We will see that you do not get into trouble over this if Pilate hears about it.”
“And if this matter comes before the governor to be heard, we will persuade him, so that you need not worry.”
The chief priests promised the soldiers they would run interference with the governor so that the soldiers wouldn’t be punished for falling asleep when they were supposed to be keeping watch.
“If the governor hears about it,” the Council promised, “we’ll stand up for you and everything will be all right.”
And should the governor hear anything in this regard, we will explain the situation to him and you will be safe.”
And if this is heard before the governor, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble.”
And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him and make you secure.

Meanwhile, the guards had scattered, but a few of them went into the city and told the high priests everything that had happened. They called a meeting of the religious leaders and came up with a plan: They took a large sum of money and gave it to the soldiers, bribing them to say, “His disciples came in the night and stole the body while we were sleeping.” They assured them, “If the governor hears about your sleeping on duty, we will make sure you don’t get blamed.” The soldiers took the bribe and did as they were told. That story, cooked up in the Jewish High Council, is still going around. * * *

And while they were on their way, some of the sentries went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. They got together with the elders, and after consultation gave the soldiers a considerable sum of money and told them, “Your story must be that his disciples came after dark, and stole him away while you were asleep. If by any chance this reaches the governor’s ears, we will put it right with him and see that you do not suffer for it.” So they took the money and obeyed their instructions. The story was spread and is current among the Jews to this day.
If this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”

And if the governor (Pilate) hears about it, we will calm him down and keep you out of trouble.”

They added, “If the governor hears about it, we’ll take care of it, and you’ll have nothing to worry about.”
