He thought his brothers would be glad that he was on their side, and even see him as an instrument of God to deliver them. But they didn’t see it that way. The next day two of them were fighting and he tried to break it up, told them to shake hands and get along with each other: ‘Friends, you are brothers, why are you beating up on each other?’

What good can come from your injuring each other?’ But the man who was wronging his neighbour pushed Moses aside saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you want to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?’ At that retort Moses fled and lived as an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

When he saw an Israelite man being treated unfairly by an Egyptian, he defended the Israelite. He took revenge by killing the Egyptian.

And when he saw one of them being unjustly harmed, he defended him and avenged the one who had been oppressed by striking down the Egyptian.
He saw one of them being ill-treated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defence and avenged him by killing the Egyptian.
And having seen someone being wronged, he defended him, and executed vengeance for the one being oppressed, having struck the Egyptian.
