1:1  Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,
1:2  which he promised beforehand through · his prophets in the holy scriptures,
1:3  the gospel concerning · his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh,
1:4  and · was designated Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ · our Lord.
1:5  Through him we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations on behalf of · his name,
1:6  among whom are you also, called to belong to Jesus Christ.
1:7  To all who are in Rome, loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1:8  First of all, I thank · my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because · your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world.
1:9  For God is my witness, · whom I serve with · my spirit in the gospel of his Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you
1:10  always in · my prayers, asking if perhaps now at last I may be able, by the will of God, to visit you.
1:11  For I long to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to · strengthen you—
1:12  that · is, that we may be mutually encouraged by · each other’s faith, I by yours and you by mine.
1:13  I do not want · you to be unaware, brethren, that I often intended to come to you (but have been prevented until · now) so that I might have some fruit · among you, just as · among the rest of the Gentiles.
1:14  I am a debtor both to the Greeks and to the barbarians, to the wise as well as to the foolish.
1:15  So for my part I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
1:17  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The · righteous by faith will live.”
1:18  For the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and the unrighteousness of those who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness,
1:19  because what can be known about · God is plain to them, for · God has revealed it to them.
1:20  Ever since the creation of the world, · his invisible attributes, · that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made. So they are without excuse.
1:21  Even though they knew · God, they did not honor him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in · their speculations and · their foolish hearts were darkened.
1:22  Professing to be wise, they became fools,
1:23  and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for images resembling corruptible man and birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
1:24  Therefore God gave them over · in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that they dishonored · their bodies among themselves.
1:25  They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for all time. Amen.
1:26  For this reason God gave them over · to degrading passions. · Their women exchanged the natural sexual function for one that is unnatural,
1:27  and likewise the men also abandoned the natural sexual relation with women and burned in · their passion for one another—men with men committing · shameless acts and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
1:28  And as they did not see fit to acknowledge · God, God gave them over · to a debased mind, to do things that ought not to be done.
1:29  They are filled with every kind of unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, meanness. They are gossips,
1:30  slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
1:31  foolish, covenant-breakers, unloving, ruthless.
1:32  Though they understand the righteous requirement of God, that those who practice · such things are worthy of death, they not only continue to do them but also to heartily approve of others who practice them.
