17:1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute · who is seated on many waters.
17:2 The kings of the earth committed acts of immorality with her, and those who dwell upon the earth became intoxicated with the wine of her immorality.”
17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into a wilderness, and there I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast covered with blasphemous names. It had seven heads and ten horns.
17:4 · The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls. In her hand she held a golden cup · full of abominations, · the impurities of her fornication.
17:5 And on · her forehead was written a name, a mystery: “Babylon the great, · mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth.”
17:6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, · the blood of those who bore witness to Jesus. · When I saw her, I was greatly astounded.
17:7 Then the angel said to me, “Why are you astounded? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her. · · ·
17:8 The beast that you saw was, and now is not, but is about to rise from the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose names have not been written · in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, will be astounded when they see the beast, because he was and is not, but is to come.
17:9 “This calls for a mind · with wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. They are also seven kings:
17:10 · five have fallen, · one is, the other has not yet come; and when he does come, he must remain for only a brief time.
17:11 · The beast that was, and now is not, · is himself an eighth king, but also one of the seven, and is on his way to destruction.
17:12 And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who as yet have not received royal power, but will receive ruling authority as kings for one hour, along with the beast.
17:13 These are of one mind and will hand over · their power and authority to the beast.
17:14 They will make war on the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings; and with him will be the called, · the chosen, and the faithful.”
17:15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples, · multitudes, · nations, and languages.
17:16 As for the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute and make her desolate and naked. · They will devour · her flesh and burn her up with fire,
17:17 · for God has put it into · their hearts to carry out · his purpose · by agreeing together · to turn over · their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
17:18 And the woman you saw is the great city · that has dominion over the kings of the earth.”
