13:1 And I saw, rising out of the sea, a beast with ten horns and seven heads. · On · his ten horns were ten crowns and on · his heads were written blasphemous names.
13:2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, · · his feet were like a bear’s, and · its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to the beast the dragon gave · his power and · his throne and great authority.
13:3 · One of the beast’s heads appeared to have been mortally wounded, but · his deadly wound · had been healed. · The whole world marveled as they followed the beast.
13:4 · They worshiped the dragon because he had given · authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast?” and, “Who is able to make war against him?”
13:5 · The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant words and blasphemies, and he was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. ·
13:6 · He opened · his mouth in blasphemies against · God, to blaspheme · his name and · his dwelling, that is, those who live in · heaven.
13:7 · The beast was allowed to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe and people and language and nation.
13:8 And all those living on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written · in the Book of Life of the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.
13:10 If anyone is meant for captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed by the sword, by the sword he will be killed. This calls for the endurance and · faithfulness of the saints.
13:11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. · He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.
13:12 · He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and those who live in it to worship the first beast, · the one whose deadly wound had been healed. · ·
13:13 · He performed impressive signs, even · making fire come down from · heaven to · earth in the sight of everyone;
13:14 and by the signs he was allowed to perform on behalf of the beast, he deceived those who live on the earth. He told those who live on the earth to make an image in honor of the beast who had been · wounded by the sword yet lived.
13:15 · The second beast was allowed to animate the image of the first beast so that · the image of the beast could speak, and could cause all those who would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
13:16 He also caused everyone—· small and · great, · · rich and · poor, · · free and · slave—to receive a mark on · their right hand · or on · their forehead.
13:17 And no one was permitted to buy or to sell unless he bore the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of his name.
13:18 This calls for · wisdom: let the one who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and · his number is six hundred and sixty-six.
