4:1 Then · Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
4:2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
4:3 And the tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, command · these stones to become bread.”
4:4 But he replied, “It stands written, “Man does not live on bread alone, · but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
4:5 Then the devil took him into the holy city, · placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,
4:6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it stands written: ‘He will command · his angels concerning you,’ and, ‘on their hands they will hold you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” ·
4:7 Jesus said to him, · “It also stands written: ‘You shall not put the Lord · your God to the test.’”
4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and · their splendor;
4:9 and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
4:10 Then Jesus said to him, · “Away with you, Satan! For it stands written, ‘You shall worship the Lord · your God and serve him alone.’”
4:11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and began to take care of him.
4:12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into · Galilee.
4:13 And leaving · Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum · by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
4:14 so that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled:
4:15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
4:16 the people · living in darkness have seen a great light, and on those living in the region and shadow of death, a light has dawned.”
4:17 From then on Jesus began · to proclaim, · “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
4:18 As he was walking · by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter and Andrew · his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
4:19 And he said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
4:20 Immediately they · left their nets and followed him.
4:21 And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John · his brother, in a boat with Zebedee · their father, preparing · their nets. And he called to them.
4:22 Immediately they · left the boat and · their father and followed him.
4:23 And Jesus went throughout all · Galilee, teaching in · their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
4:24 And the report about him spread throughout · Syria, and they brought to him all who were suffering with various diseases and pains, · demoniacs, · epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.
4:25 And great crowds followed him from · Galilee and the Decapolis, · from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
