27:1  Early in the morning, · all the ruling priests and the elders of the people laid plans against · Jesus, how they might put him to death.
27:2  And when they had bound him, they led him away and turned him over to Pilate the governor.
27:3  Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw · that Jesus was condemned, he was filled with remorse and brought the thirty silver coins back to the ruling priests and elders,
27:4  saying, “I have sinned; I betrayed innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? It is your responsibility!”
27:5  Then he threw the silver coins into the temple and left; and going away, he hanged himself.
27:6  But the ruling priests, picking up the coins, said, “It is not lawful to put these into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
27:7  So they consulted with one another and with the money bought the potter’s field · as a place to bury · foreigners.
27:8  Therefore that field has been called · the “Field of Blood” to this very day.
27:9  Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, · “They took the thirty silver coins, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,
27:10  and they gave them for the potter’s field · as the Lord directed me.”
27:11  · Then Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor questioned him, saying, “Are you the king of the Jews?” · · Jesus said, “You say so.”
27:12  But when · he was accused by the ruling priests and elders, he gave no answer.
27:13  Then Pilate said to him, · “Do you not hear how many accusations they are bringing against you?”
27:14  But Jesus refused to answer even a single charge, so that the governor was greatly astonished.
27:15  Now at festival time the governor was accustomed · to release one prisoner for the crowd, whomever they wanted.
27:16  At that time they were holding · in custody a notorious prisoner named Jesus Barabbas.
27:17  So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate said to them, · “Which one do you want me to release for you: Jesus · Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Messiah?”
27:18  For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over.
27:19  But while Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him · a message, saying, “Have nothing · to do with that innocent man; for I have suffered many things in a dream today on account of him.”
27:20  But the ruling priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for · Barabbas · and to have Jesus executed.
27:21  Once again the governor asked · them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, · “Barabbas.”
27:22  Pilate said to them, · “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Messiah?” With one voice they shouted, “Let him be crucified!”
27:23  Pilate · asked, “But what crime has he committed?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
27:24  So when Pilate saw · that he was getting nowhere but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of · this man’s blood; it is your responsibility.”
27:25  And all the people answered, saying, “Let · his blood be on us and on · our children!”
27:26  Then he released Barabbas for them, · · but he scourged Jesus and handed him over to be crucified.
27:27  Then the governor’s soldiers · took · Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the entire garrison around him.
27:28  · They stripped him and put a scarlet cloak on him;
27:29  and twisting together a crown of thorns, they placed it on · his head. · They put a staff in · his right hand, and kneeling before him they mocked him, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”
27:30  And they spat on him, and took the staff and kept beating him over the head.
27:31  And when they finished mocking him, they stripped him of the cloak and put · his own clothes back on and led him away to · crucify him.
27:32  As they were going out, · they came across a man named Simon, from Cyrene. This man they conscripted to carry · his cross.
27:33  And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull,”
27:34  they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.
27:35  And when they had crucified him, they divided · his clothes among them by casting lots.
27:36  Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
27:37  And above his head they put · the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”
27:38  Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
27:39  And those who passed by derided him, wagging · their heads
27:40  and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
27:41  The ruling priests along with the scribes and the elders were also mocking him in the same way, saying,
27:42  “He saved others, but he is not able to save himself! He is the king of Israel! Let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him!
27:43  He has put his trust in · God; let God rescue him now if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
27:44  And · the robbers who were crucified with him were taunting him in the same way.
27:45  And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
27:46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out · in a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
27:47  But when some of those standing there heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.”
27:48  And one of them at once ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, · put it on a staff, and gave it to him to drink.
27:49  But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
27:50  · And Jesus cried out again in a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
27:51  Just then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks were split;
27:52  · the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
27:53  · After his resurrection they came out of the tombs · and entered the holy city and appeared to many.
27:54  When the · centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over · Jesus, saw the earthquake and what was happening, they were terrified, and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
27:55  And looking on from a distance were many women who had followed · Jesus from · Galilee to care for his needs.
27:56  Among them were Mary · Magdalene, · Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
27:57  Toward sunset, · there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself was also a disciple of · Jesus.
27:58  This man approached · Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then · Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
27:59  And Joseph took the body, · wrapped it in a clean linen shroud,
27:60  and laid it in · his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb and went away.
27:61  · Mary · Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting across from the tomb.
27:62  On the · following day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the ruling priests and the Pharisees went as a group to Pilate.
27:63  They said, “Sir, we remember that while he was still alive that · impostor said, ‘After three days I will be raised.’
27:64  Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come · and steal him and say to the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deceit will be greater than the first.”
27:65  Pilate said to them, · “Take a guard of soldiers; go and make it as secure as you know how.”
27:66  So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard
