26:1 · When Jesus had finished · all · these sayings, he said to his disciples,
26:2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to · be crucified.”
26:3 Then the ruling priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
26:4 and they plotted together to seize · Jesus by stealth and kill him.
26:5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be a riot among the people.”
26:6 · Now while Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
26:7 a woman came to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive perfume · that she poured over · his head as he reclined at table.
26:8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant and said, “Why · this waste?
26:9 For this could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.”
26:10 But aware of this, · Jesus said to them, “Why are you causing trouble for the woman? For she has done a kind thing to me.
26:11 You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.
26:12 For by pouring · this perfume on · my body, she has prepared me for · burial.
26:13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is proclaimed · throughout the world, what she has done will also be recounted as her memorial to me.”
26:14 Then one of the twelve, the one named Judas Iscariot, went to the ruling priests
26:15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I betray him to you?” And they agreed to pay him thirty silver coins.
26:16 So from then on he watched for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
26:17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
26:18 He · said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, · “My time is at hand. I will be keeping the Passover at your house with · my disciples.”’”
26:19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them · and made preparations for the Passover.
26:20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at table with the twelve.
26:21 And as they were eating he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.”
26:22 And they were greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?”
26:23 Jesus · answered, saying, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.
26:24 The Son of Man will depart as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man had he not been born.” ·
26:25 Then Judas, who would betray him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered him, “It is as you have said.”
26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took · bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is · my body.”
26:27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you,
26:28 for this is · my blood of the covenant that is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
26:29 But I say to you, I will never drink again of this · fruit of the vine until · that day when I drink the new wine with you in the kingdom of my Father.”
26:30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
26:31 Then Jesus said to them, · “You will all fall away because of me · this very night. For it stands written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
26:32 But after · I have been raised, I will go ahead of you into · Galilee.”
26:33 Peter answered, · · saying to him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”
26:34 Jesus said to him, · “I tell you the truth, this very · night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
26:35 Peter said to him, · “Even though I must die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
26:36 Then Jesus went with them · to a place called Gethsemane and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
26:37 And taking with him · Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
26:38 Then he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, · to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with me.”
26:39 And going a short distance beyond them, he fell on his face, praying, · “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me! · Yet not as I will but as you will.”
26:40 Then he went to the disciples and found them sleeping. · He said to Peter, “So, could you men not keep watch with me for a single hour?
26:41 Stay alert and pray lest you enter a time of trial. The spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak.”
26:42 Once again he went away and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, may your will be done.” ·
26:43 Then he returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were · heavy.
26:44 So he left them again and went away, and for the third time prayed again using the same words.
26:45 Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping · and taking your rest? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
26:46 Get up, let us be going. Look, here comes · my betrayer.”
26:47 · While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived · accompanied by a large crowd from the ruling priests and the elders of the people, armed with swords and clubs.
26:48 The · betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss, he is the one; seize him.”
26:49 · Without hesitation Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
26:50 · · Jesus said to him, “Comrade, do what you came to do.” Then they came forward, laid · hands on · Jesus and took him into custody.
26:51 But one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand, drew · his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his · ear.
26:52 Then Jesus said to him, · “Put · your sword back into · its place! For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
26:53 Or do you think that I cannot ask of · my Father, and he will immediately place at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
26:54 But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”
26:55 At that · time Jesus said · to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to capture me as though I were a robber? Every day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me.
26:56 But all this has happened that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then the disciples all deserted him and ran away.
26:57 Then the men who had laid hold of · Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered.
26:58 · And Peter followed him at a distance, up to the courtyard of the high priest; then going inside he sat down with the guards to see the end.
26:59 Now the ruling priests and the entire Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against · Jesus so they could put him to death,
26:60 but they found none, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally · two came forward
26:61 and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”
26:62 And the high priest stood up and said to him, “Have you no answer to the charge these men are bringing against you?”
26:63 · But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I put you under oath by the living God, · tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
26:64 Jesus said to him, · “It is as you have said. Yet I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of The Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
26:65 Then the high priest tore · his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.
26:66 What is your verdict?” They · answered, saying, “He is deserving of death!”
26:67 Then they spat in · his face and struck him; and some slapped him,
26:68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you messiah! Who is it that struck you?”
26:69 · Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard; and a servant girl came up to him and said, “You too were with Jesus of Galilee.”
26:70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.”
26:71 Then he went out into the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.”
26:72 But again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!”
26:73 And after a little while those standing around came up to Peter and said, “Surely you too are one of them, · for the way you talk makes it clear.”
26:74 Then he began to invoke curses on himself and swear to them, “I do not know that man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.
26:75 Then Peter remembered · · what Jesus had said, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
