22:1 Once again · Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying:
22:2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son
22:3 and sent · his servants to call those who had been invited to the feast; but they would not come.
22:4 Then he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “See, I have prepared · my banquet, · my oxen and · fattened calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’
22:5 But they paid no attention and went on their way, one to · his farm, another to · his business,
22:6 while the rest seized · his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.
22:7 The · king was furious! · He sent · his troops and destroyed · those murderers and burned · their city to the ground.
22:8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
22:9 Go therefore to the busy · intersections and invite everyone you can find to the wedding feast.’
22:10 So those servants went out · into the streets and gathered everyone they could find, rogues as well as honorable men; and the wedding hall was packed with guests.
22:11 But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding garment.
22:12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And the man was speechless.
22:13 Then the king said to his assistants, ‘Bind him foot and hand and throw him out into · outer darkness, · where there will be · weeping and · gnashing of teeth.’
22:15 Then the Pharisees went out and plotted how they could trap him in what he said.
22:16 And they sent their disciples to him · along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God in truth, and show deference to no one, for you are not swayed by appearances.
22:17 So tell us, what do you think? Is it proper to pay a tax to Caesar or not?”
22:18 But Jesus, perceiving · · their evil intent, said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?
22:19 Show me the coin used for the tax.” So they brought him a denarius.
22:20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose · image is this, and whose · inscription?”
22:21 They answered him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are · God’s.”
22:22 · When they heard this they were astonished, so they left him and went away.
22:23 On that · day the Sadducees who say there is no resurrection came to him and posed a question.
22:24 They said, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry · · his widow and raise up children for his brother.’
22:25 Now there were seven brothers among us; · the first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left · his wife to his brother.
22:26 So also the second and the third, and so on to the seventh.
22:39 And a second is like it, ‘You shall love · your neighbor as yourself.’
22:40 On these · two commandments depends the whole Law and the Prophets.”
22:41 Now while the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus put this question to them: ·
22:42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, · “David’s.”
22:43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him ‘Lord,’ saying,
22:44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand until I put · your enemies under · your feet”’?
22:45 If therefore David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?”
22:46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare to question him any more from that · day on.
