20:1  “For the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of an estate who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in · his vineyard.
20:2  After having agreed · with the workers for a denarius per day, he sent them into · his vineyard.
20:3  And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the marketplace with nothing to do.
20:4  And to them he said, “You go into the vineyard as well, and whatever is fair I will pay you.’
20:5  So they went off. When he went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same thing.
20:6  And about the eleventh hour, when he had gone out and found others standing around, · he said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all · day long?’
20:7  They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’
20:8  And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last and going back to the first.’
20:9  · Those hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius.
20:10  · When those who were hired first came, they thought they would receive more; but they also each received · a denarius.
20:11  And when they received it, they began to grumble against the owner of the estate,
20:12  saying, ‘These · last worked but one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’
20:13  But he answered one of them, saying, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree with me to work for a denarius?
20:14  Take what is yours and be gone. I choose · to give to this · last man the same as I give to you.
20:15  Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or · are you envious because I am generous?’
20:16  So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
20:17  · As Jesus was going up · to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them on the way,
20:18  “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the ruling priests and the scribes. · They will condemn him to death,
20:19  · hand him over to the Gentiles to be · mocked and flogged and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”
20:20  Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with · her sons, and kneeling down · she asked something from him.
20:21  And he said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to him, “Grant that these · two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in · your kingdom.”
20:22  Jesus answered, · · saying, “You do not realize what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”
20:23  He said to them, · “My cup you will drink, · but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by · my Father.”
20:24  · When the ten heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers.
20:25  · But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and their leaders exercise authority over them.
20:26  It will not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,
20:27  and whoever would be first among you must be your servant;
20:28  just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give · his life a ransom for many.”
20:29  · As they were going out of Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
20:30  · Two blind men were sitting beside the road, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by they cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
20:31  The · crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they cried out all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
20:32  · Jesus stopped · and called them, · saying, “What do you want me to do for you?”
20:33  They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” ·
20:34  Moved with compassion, · · Jesus touched · their eyes. · Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
