2:1 · · After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
2:2 saying, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his · star at its rising and have come to worship him.”
2:3 Now when king Herod heard this, · he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
2:4 and gathering all the ruling priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.
2:5 They · told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:
2:6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you will come a ruler who will shepherd · my people · Israel.’”
2:7 Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them exactly what · time the star · had appeared.
2:8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, report back to me, so that I also may go and worship him.”
2:9 And having listened to the king, they continued their journey, and the star that they had seen in its rising went before them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
2:10 And when they caught sight of the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
2:11 · Upon entering the house they saw the child with Mary · his mother, and falling to their knees they worshiped him. Then opening · their treasure chests, they presented him with gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
2:12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another way. ·
2:13 After they had gone, · an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, “Rise, take the child and · his mother, · flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the child · to destroy him.”
2:14 So he got up, took the child and · his mother by night, and left for Egypt,
2:15 and was there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I have called · my son.”
2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious; and he sent and killed all the male children · in Bethlehem and in all · her regions who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had determined from the wise men.
2:17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
2:18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for · her children; · she refused to be comforted, because they were no more.”
2:19 But when Herod died, · an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
2:20 saying, “Rise, take the child and · his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life · are dead.”
2:21 · So Joseph got up, took the child and · his mother, and went into the land of Israel.
2:22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over · Judea in place of · his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he went into the region of Galilee.
2:23 And he went and settled in a town called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: “He will be called a Nazarene.”
