18:1 At that · time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
18:2 · Jesus invited a child to come to him, and placing him in their midst,
18:3 · said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like · children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven!
18:4 For whoever humbles himself as · this child is · greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
18:5 And whoever welcomes a child like this in · my name welcomes me.
18:6 But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around · his neck and be drowned far out at · · sea.
18:7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! It is inevitable that such things come, but woe to the one through whom they come!
18:8 “If · · your hand or · your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to enter · life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into · eternal fire. ·
18:9 And if · your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life with one eye · than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.
18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that · their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
18:12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the slopes and go in search of the one that has wandered off?
18:13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
18:14 In the same way, it is not the will of your Father · in heaven that even one of these little ones should perish.
18:15 “If · your brother sins, · go and point out his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won back · your brother.
18:16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others with you so that every matter may be confirmed on the evidence of two or three witnesses.
18:17 If · he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, you are to treat him as a pagan and a tax collector.
18:18 “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on · earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on · earth will have been loosed in heaven.
18:19 “Again, I tell you the truth, if two of you on earth are in agreement · about anything whatever you may ask, it will be done for you by · my Father who is in heaven.
18:20 For where two or three are gathered in · my name, I am there in their midst.”
18:21 Then Peter came to · Jesus and said, “Lord, how often must I forgive my brother when he sins against me? · · Up to seven times?”
18:22 Jesus said to him, · “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
18:23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a king who decided to settle accounts with · his servants.
18:24 And when he had begun to settle them, a man who owed ten thousand talents was brought to him.
18:25 And since he did not have the means to repay the debt, his master commanded that he be sold along with his wife and · children and everything he had, and that payment be made.
18:26 So the servant fell to the ground prostate before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you everything.’
18:27 Moved with compassion, · the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
18:28 But that same servant then went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’
18:29 Therefore his fellow servant fell to the ground · and pleaded with him, saying ‘Have patience with me, and I will repay you.’
18:30 But he refused. Instead, he went and threw him in prison until he should pay back the debt.
18:31 So when his fellow servants saw · what had happened, they became indignant and went and told · their master all that had taken place.
18:32 Then his master called him in · and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all · that debt because you pleaded with me.
18:33 And should not you also have had mercy on · your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?’
18:34 And in anger · his master handed him over to the prison guards to torture him until he should pay back all · he owed.
18:35 So also will · my heavenly Father · do to you, unless you each forgive · your brother from · your heart.”
