17:1 · Six days later Jesus took · · Peter and James and John · his brother, and led them up a very high mountain by themselves.
17:2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone · like the sun, · and his clothes became white as · light.
17:3 · Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
17:4 And Peter spoke · to Jesus, saying, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters here—one for you, · one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
17:5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them and a voice from the cloud said, “This is · my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him!”
17:6 And when the disciples heard this, they were overcome with fear and fell on their faces.
17:7 But Jesus came over · and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.”
17:8 And when they raised · their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.
17:9 And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, · saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
17:10 And the disciples asked him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
17:11 He · answered, saying, “To be sure, Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.
17:12 And I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.”
17:13 Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
17:14 · When they returned to the crowd, a man approached Jesus, knelt before him,
17:15 and said, “Lord, take pity on my · son, because he is an epileptic and suffers terribly; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
17:16 And I brought him to your disciples but they could not heal him.”
17:17 Jesus answered, · · saying, “O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.”
17:18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon · and it came out of him; and the boy was healed from · that hour.
17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
17:20 He · said to them, “Because of the poverty of your faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
17:22 While they were still together · in · Galilee, Jesus said to them, · “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men,
17:23 and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.” And they were greatly distressed.
17:24 And when they arrived at Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does · your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?”
17:25 “Yes,” he answered. And when he went into the house, Jesus spoke to Peter first, · saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do · earthly kings · collect tolls or taxes—from · their sons or from · outsiders?”
17:26 And when he answered, “From · outsiders,” Jesus said to him, · “Then the sons are exempt.
17:27 But lest · we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. · When you have opened · its mouth, you will find a four drachma coin; take it and give it to them for me and you.”
