16:1 Now when the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, they asked him to show them a sign from · heaven.
16:2 And he answered them, saying, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red’;
16:3 and in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you are not able to evaluate the signs of the times?
16:4 An evil and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.
16:5 · The disciples arrived at the other side but had forgotten to take any bread.
16:6 · · Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
16:7 And they began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “It is because we brought no bread.”
16:8 But when Jesus became aware · of this, he said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?
16:9 Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
16:10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?
16:11 How is it that you do not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? Beware · of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
16:12 Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven of bread but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
16:13 Now when Jesus came · into the region of Caesarea · Philippi, he asked · his disciples, “Who do people say · that the Son of Man is?”
16:14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others · Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
16:15 He said to them, “But you, who do you say that I am?”
16:16 And Simon Peter answered, saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” ·
16:17 And Jesus responded, · saying to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but · my Father · in · heaven.
16:18 And I · say to you, you are Peter, and on this · rock I will build my · church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on · earth will have been bound in · heaven, and whatever you loose on · earth will have been loosed in · heaven.”
16:20 Then he ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah
16:21 From that time Jesus began · to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and ruling priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
16:22 And Peter took him aside · and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This must never happen to you.”
16:23 But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my way, because you are not thinking the thoughts of God but those of men.”
16:24 Then · Jesus told · his disciples, “If anyone resolves to come after me, he must deny himself and take up · his cross and follow me.
16:25 For whoever resolves to save · his life will lose it; but whoever loses · his life for my sake will find it.
16:26 For what advantage will there be for a person if he gains the whole world yet forfeits · his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for · his life?
16:27 For the Son of Man is to come in the glory of his Father with · his angels, and then he will repay each person according to · his conduct.
16:28 I tell you the truth, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in · his kingdom.
