13:1  That same · day Jesus went out · of the house and was sitting by the sea.
13:2  And great crowds gathered around him so that he got into a boat and sat down, and all the crowd stood on the beach.
13:3  And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out · to sow.
13:4  And as · he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.
13:5  Other · seed fell on · rocky places, where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprouted because · it had no depth of soil.
13:6  But when the sun came up it was scorched; and because · it had no root, it withered away.
13:7  Other · seed fell among · thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
13:8  Other · seed fell on · good soil · and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some · sixty, and some thirty.
13:9  He who has ears, let him hear!”
13:10  And the disciples came to him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”
13:11  He · answered them, saying, “Because to you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.
13:12  For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
13:13  This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see and hearing they do not hear nor do they understand.
13:14  And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled that says: ‘You will surely hear but never understand, and you will surely see but never perceive.
13:15  For the heart of this people has become dull, and with their ears they scarcely hear, and · their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
13:16  But blessed are your · eyes, because they see, and · your ears, because they hear.
13:17  I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you are seeing but did not see them, and to hear the things you are hearing but did not hear them.
13:18  “Hear then the parable of the sower:
13:19  When anyone hears the message of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away that which was sown in · his heart. This is what was sown along the path.
13:20  As for the one who was sown on · rocky places, this is the one who hears the message and immediately receives it with joy;
13:21  yet he has no root in himself but lasts only a short time, and when suffering or persecution arises on account of the message, immediately he falls away.
13:22  As for the one who was sown among · thorns, this is the one who hears the message, but · worldly anxiety · and the deception of wealth choke the message and it becomes unfruitful.
13:23  As for the one who was sown on · good soil, this is the one who hears the message and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces, some a hundredfold, some · sixty, and some thirty.”
13:24  Jesus put another parable before them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man sowing good seed in · his field.
13:25  But while · everyone was sleeping, · his enemy came · and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.
13:26  When · the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well.
13:27  And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in · your field? Why then does it have weeds?’
13:28  And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ And the servants said to him, ‘So do you want us to go and gather them?’
13:29  But he replied, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you uproot the wheat along with them.
13:30  Let both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time · I will tell the harvesters, “First gather the weeds and bind them into bundles to · be burned, then gather the wheat into · my barn.”’”
13:31  He gave them another parable, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in · his field.
13:32  It is the smallest of all the seeds; but when it is grown, it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come and nest in · its branches.”
13:33  He spoke another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and put into three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
13:34  All these things Jesus spoke · to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he told them nothing;
13:35  so that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, “I will open my mouth in parables; · I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.”
13:36  Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, · saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
13:37  And he answered, saying, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man;
13:38  and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the weeds are the sons of the evil one;
13:39  and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; and the harvest is the end of the age; and the harvesters are the angels.
13:40  Therefore just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.
13:41  The Son of Man will send · his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and those who break his laws.
13:42  And they will throw them into the fiery furnace, · where there will be · weeping and · gnashing of teeth.
13:43  Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear!
13:44  “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field that a man found and covered up. Then in · his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys · that field.
13:45  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls;
13:46  and when he found one pearl of great value, he went away and sold all that he had and bought it.
13:47  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and caught fish of every kind;
13:48  and when it was full, they pulled it up onto the shore; and they sat down and put the good fish into baskets, but the bad they threw away.
13:49  So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
13:50  and cast them into the fiery furnace, · where there will be · weeping and · gnashing of teeth.
13:51  “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.”
13:52  And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a house who brings out of · his treasure things new and old.”
13:53  Now when Jesus had finished · · these parables, he moved on from there.
13:54  And upon arriving at · his hometown, he taught them in · their synagogue so that they were amazed and said, “Where did this man get such · wisdom and · miraculous powers?
13:55  Is not this the · carpenter’s son? Is not · his mother called Mary, and · his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
13:56  And · his sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
13:57  And they were deeply offended at him. · But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.”
13:58  And he did not do many miracles there because of · their unbelief.
