11:1 Now when Jesus had finished · giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he went on from there · to teach and proclaim his message in · their towns.
11:2 · Now when John heard in · prison about the works of the Messiah, he sent word through · his disciples,
11:3 asking him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we wait for someone else?”
11:4 And Jesus answered · them, saying, “Go and tell John what you hear and see:
11:5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, · the dead are raised and the poor are being told the good news.
11:6 And blessed is the one who does not stumble because of me.”
11:7 As they · went away, Jesus began · to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?
11:8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear · soft clothing are in the courts of kings.
11:9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
11:10 This is the one about whom it stands written, ‘Behold, I send · my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare · your way before you.’
11:11 “I tell you the truth, there has not risen among those born of women anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11:12 From · the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent are taking it by force.
11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John;
11:14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.
11:16 “To what · shall I compare · this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who cry to their friends,
11:17 ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is shown to be right · by what she does.”
11:20 Then he began to reprimand the towns in which most of his mighty works had been done, · because they did not repent:
11:21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if in Tyre and Sidon had been done the mighty works that were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
11:22 Nevertheless I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
11:23 And as for you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if in Sodom had been done the mighty works that were done in you, it would have remained to this day.
11:24 Nevertheless I tell you that it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
11:25 At that · time Jesus declared, · “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and · earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and clever and revealed them to little children;
11:26 yes, · Father, for such was your gracious will.
11:27 All things were handed over to me by · my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father except the Son and the one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will refresh you.
11:29 Take · my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
11:30 · For my yoke is easy and · my burden is light.”
