11:1 When Jesus had finished giving these instructions to his twelve disciples, he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.
11:2 When John who was in prison heard what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples
11:3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”
11:4 Jesus answered them, “Go back and tell John what you hear and see:
11:5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
11:6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”
11:7 As John’s disciples were departing, Jesus spoke to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
11:8 Then what did you go out to see? Someone robed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are found in royal palaces.
11:9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.
11:10 This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’
11:11 “Amen, I say to you, among those born of women, no one has been greater than John the Baptist, and yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11:12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and the violent are taking it by force.
11:13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until the arrival of John.
11:14 And if you are willing to accept it, John is the Elijah who was destined to return.
11:16 “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another:
11:17 ‘We played the flute for you, but you would not dance; we sang a dirge, and you refused to mourn.’
11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed.’
11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! He is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ Yet wisdom is proved right by her actions.”
11:20 Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his mighty deeds had been performed because they had refused to repent.
11:21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the mighty deeds performed in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
11:22 But I tell you, on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
11:23 And as for you, Capernaum: ‘Will you be exalted to heaven? You will be cast down to the netherworld.’ For if the mighty deeds performed in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would be standing to this day.
11:24 But I tell you, on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you.”
11:25 At that time, Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to children.
11:26 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
11:27 “All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.
11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and overburdened, and I will give you rest.
11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
11:30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
