10:1  · Jesus gathered · his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits so that they could drive them out and heal every kind of disease and sickness.
10:2  These are the names of the · twelve apostles: first, Simon, who is called Peter, then Andrew · his brother; · James the son of Zebedee, and John · his brother;
10:3  Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
10:4  Simon the Cananaean, and Judas · Iscariot, who · betrayed him.
10:5  These · twelve Jesus sent out · after instructing them as follows: “Do not go among the Gentiles and do not enter any Samaritan town;
10:6  but go rather to the lost sheep · of the house of Israel.
10:7  As you go, · proclaim the message, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
10:8  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you received, freely give.
10:9  Do not take gold, or silver, or copper in · your money belts,
10:10  or a bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker deserves · his keep.
10:11  And whatever · town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy and stay there until you leave.
10:12  And when you enter a house, give it your greeting.
10:13  · If the household is worthy, let your greeting of peace come · upon it; but if it is not worthy, let · your peace return to you.
10:14  And if anyone will not receive you or listen to · your message, as you leave · that house or · that town shake off the dust from your feet.
10:15  I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for · that town.
10:16  “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as · serpents and innocent as · doves.
10:17  And beware of · men, for they will hand you over to the courts, and they will flog you in · their synagogues;
10:18  and you will be brought before governors · and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
10:19  But when they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that · time.
10:20  For it will not be you · speaking but the Spirit of your Father · speaking through you.
10:21  “Brother will hand over · brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
10:22  And you will be hated by all on account of · my name. But the one who endures to the end, this one will be saved.
10:23  When · they persecute you in · one town, flee to · another; for I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
10:24  “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above · his master.
10:25  It is enough for the disciple that he be as · his teacher, and the servant as · his master. If they have called the head of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much more will they revile the members of his household!
10:26  “Therefore do not be afraid of them; for there is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and hidden that will not be made known.
10:27  What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear proclaim from the housetops.
10:28  · Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
10:29  Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from · your Father.
10:30  But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
10:31  So do not be afraid; you are of greater value than many sparrows.
10:32  So everyone who will acknowledge me before · others, I will acknowledge him before · my Father who is in · heaven;
10:33  but whoever disowns me before · others, I will disown him before · my Father who is in · heaven.
10:34  “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
10:35  For I came to turn a man against · his father, and a daughter against · her mother, and a daughter-in-law against · her mother-in-law;
10:36  and a man’s enemies · will be · members of his own household.
10:37  Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
10:38  And whoever does not take up · his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
10:39  Whoever finds · his life will lose it, but whoever loses · his life for my sake will find it.
10:40  “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
10:41  Whoever welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.
10:42  And whoever, because he is a disciple, gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, I tell you the truth, he will by no means lose · his reward.”
