6:1 And Jesus left from there and went to · his hometown, and his disciples followed him. ·
6:2 And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many, when they heard him, were astonished, saying, “Where does this man get these things? · What · wisdom · has been given to him? · How are such · mighty works done through · his hands?
6:3 Is this man not the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, · Joses, · Judas, and Simon? And are not · his sisters here with us?” And they were deeply offended at him.
6:4 And Jesus said to them, · “A prophet is not without honor except in · his hometown, and among · his relatives, and in · his own household.”
6:5 And he was not able to do any mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.
6:6 And he was amazed at · their lack of faith. And he went around among the villages teaching.
6:7 And he called to himself the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. ·
6:8 · He instructed them to take nothing for their journey except simply a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts—
6:9 but to wear sandals. Then he added, “Do not put on two tunics.”
6:10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that area.
6:11 And any place that does not receive you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake off the dust · from under · your feet as a witness against them.”
6:12 So departing, they proclaimed that people should repent,
6:13 and they drove out many demons. · They anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
6:14 · King Herod heard about · this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. · · Some were saying, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead. · That is why miraculous powers are at work · in him.”
6:15 But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” Still others were saying, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”
6:16 But when Herod heard · this, he said, “He is John, the man I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead.”
6:17 For it was Herod himself · who had sent and arrested · John and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip · his brother, because he had married her.
6:18 For John had been saying · to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.”
6:19 · So Herodias was nursing a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to do it,
6:20 · because Herod feared · John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, and he protected him. · When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, yet he heard him gladly.
6:21 Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his government officials, · · military commanders, and · prominent men of Galilee.
6:22 · When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased · Herod and his dinner companions. The king said to the young girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”
6:23 And he promised her insistently with an oath, “Whatever you ask for, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.”
6:24 So she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” And her mother said, “The head of John the baptizer.”
6:25 And immediately, entering with haste to the king, she asked him, saying, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the baptizer on a platter.”
6:26 · The king became very sad, but because of what he had promised with an oath, and because of his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her request.
6:27 So without delay the king dispatched the executioner and ordered him to bring · John’s head. · He went and beheaded John in · prison,
6:28 and brought · his head on a platter and gave it to the young girl. · The young girl in turn gave it to her mother.
6:29 · When John’s disciples heard · of this, they came and took · his corpse and placed it in a tomb.
6:30 · The apostles rejoined · Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
6:31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to some deserted place and rest a while.” For many were · coming and · going, and they did not even have a time to eat.
6:32 So they left in a boat to a deserted place by themselves.
6:33 · Many people saw them leaving, · recognized them, and hurried together on foot from all the towns and arrived there ahead of them.
6:34 · When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw the large crowd, and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.
6:35 · As the hour grew late, his disciples came to him · and said, “This is a deserted · place and the hour is already late.
6:36 Send them away so they can go into the surrounding hamlets and villages and buy for themselves something to eat.”
6:37 But he answered them, saying, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Should we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”
6:38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” · When they found out they said, “Five—and two fish.”
6:39 Then he ordered them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
6:40 So they sat down in orderly groups of hundreds and fifties.
6:41 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to · heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples so they could distribute them. And he divided the two fish among them all.
6:43 Then they picked up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and what was left of the fish.
6:44 And those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.
6:45 · Immediately Jesus made · his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, toward Bethsaida, while he dispersed the crowd.
6:46 · After he had taken leave of them, he went to the mountain to pray.
6:47 · When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the lake and he was alone on the land.
6:48 · He saw them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he came toward them, walking on the lake. · He intended to pass by them,
6:49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought that he was a ghost. And they cried out,
6:50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid!”
6:51 Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind died down. And they were absolutely amazed,
6:52 for they did not understand about the loaves; but their heart was · hardened.
6:53 So when they had crossed over, they came to · land at Gennesaret · where they tied up the boat.
6:54 · When they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized Jesus,
6:55 ran throughout that whole · area, and began to bring those who were ill on their mats to wherever they heard he was.
6:56 And wherever he entered villages, towns, or rural areas, they would place the sick in the marketplaces and implore him that they might touch just the fringe of his cloak. And as many as touched him were made well.
