5:1  So they went to the other side of the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
5:2  And just as Jesus got out of the boat, there met him from the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
5:3  He had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one could bind him any longer, not even with a chain.
5:4  For · he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains were torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5:5  · Unceasingly, night and day among the tombs and in the mountains, he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.
5:6  But when he saw · Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him.
5:7  · Crying out in a loud voice, he exclaimed, “What have you to do with me, · Jesus, Son of the · Most High God? Swear to · God that you will not torment me!”
5:8  (For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of the man, · you unclean spirit!”) ·
5:9  And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” · He said to him, “Legion is my name, for we are many.”
5:10  And he kept begging him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
5:11  Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the mountainside.
5:12  And the unclean spirits begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs so we can enter them.”
5:13  So he gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out · and entered the pigs. · The herd (about two thousand strong) rushed down the steep bank into the sea and was drowned. ·
5:14  · Those tending the pigs fled and reported it in the village and throughout the countryside, and people came to see what had · happened.
5:15  · They came to · Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had the legion, sitting, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
5:16  And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the pigs.
5:17  Then they began to implore Jesus to depart from · their region.
5:18  · As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging him to go with him.
5:19  But he did not permit him. Instead, he said to him, “Go to · your home, to · your own people, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and that he had mercy on you.”
5:20  · The man left and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; · and everyone was amazed.
5:21  · When Jesus had crossed · in a boat again to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was by the lake.
5:22  Then one of the synagogue officials, Jairus by name, came there. · When he saw Jesus, he fell at · his feet
5:23  and begged him earnestly, saying, · “My little daughter is about to die. Come and place your hands on her so she will be healed and live.”
5:24  So Jesus went with him. · A large crowd was following him and crowding around him.
5:25  And a woman was there who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years.
5:26  · She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors, and had spent · all she had, yet it benefitted her nothing; rather she had grown worse. ·
5:27  When she heard about · Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched · his cloak,
5:28  for she had been saying, “If I can only touch · his clothes, I will be healed.”
5:29  · Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
5:30  And · Jesus, knowing in himself that · power had gone out from him, immediately turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” ·
5:31  And his disciples said to him, · “You see the crowd pressing around you and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
5:32  But he looked around to see the one who had done this.
5:33  Then the woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
5:34  And he said to her, “Daughter, · your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of · your affliction.”
5:35  While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue official, saying, · “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?”
5:36  · But Jesus, ignoring · what was said, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
5:37  And he did not permit anyone to follow him, except · Peter, · James, and John the brother of James.
5:38  · They came to the house of the synagogue official, and Jesus saw a commotion · with people weeping and wailing loudly.
5:39  · Upon entering he said to them, “Why are you making such a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is sleeping.”
5:40  And they began to ridicule him. But when he had put them all out, he took the father of the child and her mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.
5:41  And taking hold of the child’s hand, · he said to her, “Talitha koum!” which is translated, · “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
5:42  And the little girl got up at once and began to walk; for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were utterly amazed.
5:43  And Jesus strictly ordered them that no one should know about this, and he told them that something to eat should be given to her.
