1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
1:2 As it is written in · Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I am sending · my messenger before your face, who will prepare · your way,
1:3 a voice calling out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make · his paths straight.’”
1:4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness and began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
1:5 And all the Judean countryside and all · Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing · their sins.
1:6 Now John was · clothed with camel’s hair with a leather belt around · his waist, and he fed on locusts and wild honey.
1:7 And he was proclaiming, saying, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; of whom I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals.
1:8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
1:9 Now in those · days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan River by John.
1:10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opening up and the Spirit as a dove descending on him.
1:11 Then a voice came from · heaven, “You are · my beloved Son; · in you I take delight.”
1:12 · At once the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness,
1:13 and he was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by · Satan. · He was there with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to him.
1:14 Now after · John had been taken into custody, · Jesus went · into · Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,
1:15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
1:16 · As Jesus was going alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
1:17 And Jesus said to them, · “Come, follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
1:18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
1:19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John · his brother, who also were in their boat mending · nets.
1:20 And immediately he called them, and they left · their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
1:21 Then they went to Capernaum; and on the next Sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
1:22 And they were astonished at · his teaching, for he was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
1:23 · Suddenly there was in · their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
1:24 saying, “What · do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
1:25 But Jesus rebuked it, · saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!”
1:26 Then the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions, · · cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him.
1:27 · All the people were amazed, so that they asked among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even gives orders to unclean spirits · and they obey him.”
1:28 And his fame spread · quickly everywhere throughout all the country round about · Galilee.
1:29 · As soon as they went out of the synagogue they went to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
1:30 Now the mother-in-law of Simon lay sick with a fever, and without delay they spoke to Jesus about her.
1:31 So he came and raised her up, taking her by the hand. Then the fever left her, and she began to wait on them.
1:32 When evening · came, after the sun had gone down, people were bringing to him all who were sick as well as the demon-possessed.
1:33 And the entire city was gathered together at the door.
1:34 So he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and drove out many demons. But he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
1:35 · Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus arose, left the house and went out to a deserted place; and there he spent time in prayer.
1:36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,
1:37 · found him, and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”
1:38 And he said to them, “Let us go elsewhere, into the nearby towns, so that I may preach there also, because that is what I came to do.”
1:39 So he traveled throughout all Galilee, preaching in · their synagogues · and driving out · demons.
1:40 And a leper came to him, pleading for help from him, and falling on his knees · he exclaimed to him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean!”
1:41 · Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out · his hand and touched him, · saying to him, “I am willing; be made clean.”
1:42 And at once the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
1:43 And after sternly warning him, Jesus sent him away at once,
1:44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for · your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
1:45 However, he went out and began to announce it publicly and spread abroad the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but stayed out in unpopulated areas. Yet people kept coming to him from every quarter.
