5:1 Come now, you rich people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming your way.
5:2 · Your riches have rotted and · your clothes are moth-eaten.
5:3 · Your gold and your silver have rusted and · their rust will be a witness against you, and it will consume · your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days.
5:4 Look, the wages you have held back from the workers who mowed · your fields · are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
5:5 You have lived on the earth in self-indulgence and luxury. You have fattened · your hearts for a day of slaughter.
5:6 You condemn the innocent and put him to death; he does not resist you.
5:7 Be patient, therefore, dear friends, until the coming of the Lord. Note how the farmer waits for the precious harvest of the earth, being patient for it until it receives the early and latter rains.
5:8 You too must be patient; strengthen · your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.
5:9 Do not complain against one another, my brothers, lest you be judged. Look, the judge is standing at the doors.
5:10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take · the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
5:11 For sure, we regard as blessed those who persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and have seen the result of the Lord's activity, that the Lord is exceedingly compassionate and merciful.
5:12 Above all, · my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath. Rather let your “Yes” be · yes and your “No,” no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.
5:14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
5:15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
5:16 Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The active prayer of a righteous person has great power.
5:17 Elijah was a man exactly like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months no rain fell on the earth.
5:18 Then he prayed again, and the heavens poured down rain and the earth produced · its harvest.
5:19 My brothers, if anyone among you strays from the truth and someone brings him back,
5:20 he should know that the one who brings a sinner back from the error of his way will save that person’s soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
