1:1  James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes · in the dispersion: Greetings.
1:2  Consider it sheer joy, my brothers, when you encounter various kinds of trials,
1:3  because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
1:4  · And let endurance carry out its intended purpose, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.
1:5  But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to everyone generously, · not demanding something in return, and it will be given to him.
1:6  But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the doubter is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed about.
1:7  For that person must not imagine · that he will receive anything from the Lord;
1:8  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all · his ways.
1:9  Let the brother of limited means take pride · · in · his high position,
1:10  and the wealthy brother in · his humiliation, because like a flower in the meadow he will pass away.
1:11  For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the meadow; · · its flower falls and · its beauty · fades. In the same way · the rich man will fade away while pursuing his business.
1:12  Blessed is the man who remains steadfast when tested, because once he is shown to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
1:13  No one when tempted should say, “I am being tempted by God”; · for God cannot be tempted to do evil, and he himself tempts no one else.
1:14  But each person is tempted when by · his own desire he is lured away and enticed.
1:15  Then · desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin; · and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
1:16  Do not be deceived, my dear brothers.
1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow caused by change.
1:18  According to his sovereign plan, he brought us into being through his word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits of all he created.
1:19  Understand this, my dear brothers: everyone must be · quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.
1:20  For the anger of man does not bring about the righteousness that God requires.
1:21  Therefore put aside all filthiness and rampant wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save · your souls.
1:22  But be doers of the word and not merely hearers, deceiving yourselves.
1:23  For if someone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a person who looks at · his natural face · in a mirror;
1:24  then after looking at himself · he goes away and immediately forgets what he was like.
1:25  But the person who looks intently into the perfect law, the law that provides liberty, and continues in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer—he will be blessed in · his doing.
1:26  If someone thinks that he is religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. ·
1:27  Religion that is pure and undefiled before · God · the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in · their time of trouble, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
