11:1  Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
11:2  For by it the men of the past were approved by God.
11:3  By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not brought into being from anything observable.
11:4  By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which faith he was attested as righteous, God himself showing his approval by accepting · his gifts. · And though he died, he still speaks through his faith.
11:5  By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death, and he could not be found, because God had taken him. · For before he was taken he had been approved as one who had been pleasing to God,

11:9  By faith he migrated to the land · he had been promised, as to a foreign land, living in tents as did Isaac and Jacob, · heirs with him of the same promise, ·
11:10  for he was looking forward to the city which has foundations, whose designer and builder is · God.
11:11  By faith · Abraham was enabled to become a father—even though Sarah herself was sterile and beyond the normal age of childbearing—because he regarded as faithful the one who had made the promise.
11:12  And so it was that from this one man, and he was already impotent, there were born · descendants as many as the stars of heaven in number and as innumerable as the grains of sand · along the shore of the sea ·
11:13  These all died in faith, without receiving the fulfillment of the promises, but they saw them from a distance and greeted them. · They acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles in the land.
11:14  For those who speak in such a way make it clear that they are seeking a land of their own.
11:15  · If they had been referring to that country from which they had set out, they would have had opportunity to return.
11:16  But as it is, they were longing for a better homeland, that is, a heavenly one. For this reason God is not ashamed · to be called their God, for he has prepared a city to receive them.
11:17  By faith Abraham, when he was being tested, offered up · Isaac; yes, he who had received the promises was offering his only son,
11:18  of whom he had been told, “It is through Isaac that descendants will be named for you.”
11:19  He considered that God was able to raise him up even from the dead, · and, in a sense, he did receive him back from there.
11:20  By faith Isaac invoked blessings on Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come. · ·
11:21  By faith Jacob, while dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and bowed in worship, leaning on the top of his staff.
11:22  By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, spoke about the exodus of the sons of Israel and gave instructions regarding the burial of his bones.
11:23  By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by · his parents, because they saw that he was an extraordinary · child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. ·
11:24  By faith Moses, when he was grown up, disdained to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
11:25  choosing rather to suffer hardship along with the people of God than to enjoy the transient pleasure of sin.
11:26  He considered abuse for the sake of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, · for he was looking ahead to his reward.
11:27  By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the anger of the king, for he endured as though seeing the one who is invisible.
11:28  By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroying angel would not touch · their firstborn.
11:29  By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried, they were drowned.
11:30  By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.
11:31  By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with the unbelievers, because she had received the spies with peace.
11:32  And what more shall I say? For time would fail me if I told · about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, about both David and Samuel and the prophets,
11:33  who through faith conquered kingdoms, brought about justice, obtained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,
11:34  extinguished raging flames, escaped the edge of the sword; who after weakness were made strong, who became mighty in war and put foreign armies to flight.
11:35  Women received their dead by resurrection. · But others were tortured, after refusing to accept · release, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
11:36  Others · experienced jeering and flogging, and even chains and prison.
11:37  They were stoned; they were sawn in two; they were murdered by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted, mistreated
11:38  (of whom the world was not worthy). They wandered aimlessly in deserts and on mountains, · living in caves and · crevices in the ground,
11:39  and although they all had received commendation for their faith, they did not receive what had been promised,
11:40  for · God had provided something better with us in mind, so that they should not reach their goal apart from us.
