3:1  O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified?
3:2  Only this I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?
3:3  Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, would you now attain your goal by the flesh?
3:4  Have you suffered so many things for no purpose?—if it really was for no purpose.
3:5  So does the one who gives you the Spirit and works miracles among you do it by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
3:6  Consider Abraham: “He believed · God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.”
3:7  Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
3:8  And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, · preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you will all nations be blessed.” ·
3:9  So then, those who believe are blessed along with Abraham, the believer.
3:10  For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things written in the book of the law, to do them.”
3:11  Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, · because “it is by faith that the righteous person will live.”
3:12  However, the law is not of faith; on the contrary, it teaches that “the one who does them will live by them.”
3:13  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree”—
3:14  in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through · faith.
3:15  To speak in human terms, brothers: even though a covenant is one made by man, yet when it has been ratified, no one can set it aside or add anything to it.
3:16  Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture does not say, “and to descendants,” referring to many, but “and to your descendant,” referring to one, who is Christ.
3:17  What I am saying is this: · the law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not annul a covenant previously established by · God, so as to make the promise void.
3:18  For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God gave it to Abraham through a promise. ·
3:19  Why then was the law given? It was added because of · transgressions, until the descendant should come to whom the promise had been made. It was established through angels by a mediator.
3:20  Now a mediator is not for one party only, · but God is one.
3:21  Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. ·
3:22  But the Scripture confined · everything under sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
3:23  Now before faith came, · we were held in custody under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.
3:24  Thus the law was our disciplinarian until the time of Christ, so that we might be declared righteous by faith.
3:25  But now that faith has come, · we are no longer under a guardian.
3:26  For you are all sons of God through · faith in Christ Jesus.
3:27  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
3:28  Now there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
3:29  And if you belong to Christ, then you are descendants of Abraham, heirs according to the promise.
