28:1  And when we had escaped safely, then we learned that the island was called Malta.
28:2  The native people showed us no · ordinary kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to · rain · and because of the cold.
28:3  When Paul had gathered · · a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out from the heat and fastened onto · his hand.
28:4  When · the native people saw the creature hanging from · his hand, they said to each other, “Certainly this man is a murderer, · and though he has escaped from the sea, · justice has not allowed him to live.”
28:5  But Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.
28:6  They · were expecting that he was going to swell up or suddenly fall down dead; but when they waited a long time and saw no misfortune happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
28:7  Now in the region around · that place were fields belonging to the leading man of the island, by name Publius, who welcomed us and for three days entertained us hospitably.
28:8  It happened that · the father of Publius lay sick with bouts of fever and with dysentery. Paul visited him, · and when he had prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him.
28:9  And when this happened, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured.
28:10  They also honored us with many honors, and when we were getting ready to sail, they put · on board whatever we needed.
28:11  After · three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered at the island, a ship of Alexandria, with the “Heavenly Twins” as a figurehead.
28:12  And when we put in at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
28:13  From there we circled round and came to Rhegium; and after one day a south wind came up, and on the following day we arrived in Puteoli,
28:14  where we found brethren, and were invited to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward · Rome.
28:15  And the brothers there, when they heard · about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, · Paul gave thanks to God and took courage.
28:16  And when we entered Rome, Paul was allowed · to stay by himself, with a soldier · guarding him.
28:17  And it happened that after three days Paul called together the leaders of the Jews. And when they gathered, he said to them: “My brothers, though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
28:18  They examined me and wanted to release me, because · there was no basis for a death sentence against me.
28:19  But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, but not as though I had some charge to bring against · my own people.
28:20  For this reason, therefore, · I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I wear · this chain.”
28:21  And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, · nor have any of the brothers come from there and reported or spoken any bad about you.
28:22  But we desire to hear from you what you think, for with regard to · this sect it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”
28:23  When they had arranged · a day to meet with him, many came to him at his lodging, and he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about · Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning till evening.
28:24  And some were convinced by what he said, but others refused to believe.
28:25  And not being in harmony among themselves, they departed after Paul made · one further statement. “The Holy Spirit · was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: ·
28:26  “‘Go to · this people, and say, “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive”;
28:27  for the heart of this people has become dull, and they hear with difficultly with their ears, and · their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I should heal them.’
28:28  So let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; · even they will listen.”
28:30  Paul lived there · two whole years in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to him,
28:31  proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching · about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
