19:1  And it happened that while · Apollos was at Corinth, Paul went through the inland regions and came to Ephesus. · There he found some disciples
19:2  and said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They · said to him, “Why, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.”
19:3  So Paul asked, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they replied, “Into the baptism of John.”
19:4  Paul said, · “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in · Jesus.”
19:5  Upon hearing this, · they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
19:6  And when Paul laid his hands on them, · the Holy Spirit came · on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
19:7  And the men were in all about twelve.
19:8  And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them concerning the things of the kingdom of God.
19:9  But when some became stubborn and refused to believe, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them, taking the disciples with him, and continued daily to discourse in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
19:10  This · went on for two years, so that all the residents of · Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
19:11  They were no ordinary miracles · that · God was doing by the hands of Paul,
19:12  so that · handkerchiefs and aprons were carried off from · his body for the sick, and diseases were driven away by them · · and evil spirits · came out.
19:13  But some also of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those having · evil spirits, · saying, “I adjure you by that Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”
19:14  There were · seven sons of a man named Sceva, a Jewish high priest, who were doing this.
19:15  But the evil spirit answering · said to them, · “Jesus I know, and · Paul I recognize, but who are you?”
19:16  And the man in whom was the evil spirit · leaped on them, took control and overpowered all seven of them, so that they fled, naked and wounded, out of · that house.
19:17  And this became known to all the Jews and Greeks who lived in · Ephesus. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was exalted.
19:18  Also many of those who had become believers kept coming, confessing and divulging · their practices.
19:19  And a number of those who had practiced · magic arts collected their books and burned them up in the sight of all. And they calculated the value of them and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
19:20  So the word of the Lord continued to spread and grow in power.
19:21  Now after all these things had taken place, Paul resolved · in · spirit to pass through · Macedonia and Achaia and go on to Jerusalem, saying, “After · I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
19:22  So after sending to · Macedonia two of those who were helping him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed for a time in · Asia.
19:23  About that time there broke out · · no little disturbance concerning the Way.
19:24  For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen.
19:25  He called them together with · workmen in · similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this · trade · prosperity comes to us.
19:26  And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia · this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made by hand are not gods at all.
19:27  There is danger not only · that this trade of ours · will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis is in danger of being regarded as worthless and her magnificence in danger of · being destroyed, · she whom all · Asia and the world worship.”
19:28  When they heard · · this, they were filled with anger and began to cry out, saying, “Great is · Artemis of the Ephesians!”
19:29  So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with a single purpose into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, traveling-companions of Paul.
19:30  But when Paul wanted to go in among the people, the disciples would not let him.
19:31  And also some of the Asiarchs, being friendly to him, sent to him and urged him not to commit himself to the theater.
19:32  So then some were shouting one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and · most of them did not know why they had assembled.
19:33  And some of the crowd prompted Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. · And Alexander motioned with his hand and wanted to make a defense to the crowd.
19:34  But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single cry went up from them all as they cried out for about two hours, “Great is · Artemis of the Ephesians!”
19:35  And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple keeper of the great Artemis and of her image that fell from heaven?
19:36  So, since these things are indisputable, you must be quiet and do nothing rash.
19:37  For you have brought · these men, who are neither temple robbers nor blasphemers against · our goddess.
19:38  If then Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another there.
19:39  But if you want anything in addition, it shall be settled in the legal assembly.
19:40  For indeed we are in danger of being charged in connection with this day’s riot, there being no cause for it; and we will not be able to give an explanation for · this commotion.” And having said this, he dismissed the assembly.
