10:1  There was a man · in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion from the cohort that was called the Italian,
10:2  a devout man and one who feared · God with all · his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God continually.
10:3  He saw in a vision clearly, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, “Cornelius.”
10:4  · Staring at him and becoming afraid, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, · “Your prayers and · your acts of charity have gone up as a memorial before · God.
10:5  And now send men to Joppa and send for a man named Simon who is called Peter.
10:6  He is lodging with a man named Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
10:7  When · the angel who spoke to him had gone away, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him,
10:8  and when he had related everything to them, he sent them to · Joppa.
10:9  The · following day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray about the sixth hour.
10:10  And he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance,
10:11  and he saw the heavens opened and a certain object descending, like a great sheet, being let down by its four corners upon the earth.
10:12  In it were all kinds of · four-footed animals, and reptiles of the earth, and birds of the air.
10:13  Then a voice came to him, “Get up, Peter; slaughter and eat!”
10:14  · But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”
10:15  And a voice came again, a second time, to him, “What · God has made clean, you must not consider common.”
10:16  This · happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up to · heaven.
10:17  Now while Peter was perplexed within himself · as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, the men · sent by · Cornelius, having made inquiry for the house of Simon, stood at the gate
10:18  and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was staying there.
10:19  · · As Peter was thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.
10:20  But get up, go down, and accompany them without hesitation, because I have sent them.”
10:21  And Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for which you have come?”
10:22  And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright man and one who fears · God, who is well spoken of by the whole nation of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to · his house and to hear words from you.”
10:23  So he invited them in and gave them lodging. On the · next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers · from Joppa went with him.
10:24  And on the following day they entered · Caesarea. · · Cornelius was expecting them and had called together · his relatives and · close friends.
10:25  When · Peter entered, · Cornelius met him · and fell at his feet and worshiped him.
10:26  · But Peter made him get up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also just a man.”
10:27  And as he talked with him, he went inside and found many people gathered.
10:28  And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another race, but God showed me · that I should call no person common or unclean.
10:29  Therefore, · when I was summoned, I came without raising any objection. So I ask for what reason did you send for me?”
10:30  And · Cornelius said, “Four days ago at this · hour, I was praying at the ninth hour in · my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing
10:31  and he said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard · and · your acts of charity have been remembered before · God.
10:32  Send therefore to Joppa and invite Simon who is called Peter. He is staying in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’
10:33  So immediately I sent for you, and you did well by coming. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that has been commanded you by the Lord.”
10:34  So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God is not one who shows partiality; ·
10:35  but in every nation · anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him
10:36  As for the word that he sent to the sons of Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),
10:37  you yourselves know the account that spread throughout all · Judea, beginning from · Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed,
10:38  Jesus · of Nazareth, how God anointed him · with the Holy Spirit and with power; who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because · God was with him.
10:39  And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom also they put to death by hanging him on a tree.
10:40  This man · God raised up on the third day and allowed him to be seen,
10:41  not to all the people but to witnesses who had been previously chosen by · God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he · rose from the dead.
10:42  And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by · God to be judge of the living and the dead.
10:43  To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through · his name.”
10:44  While Peter was still speaking · · these words, the Holy Spirit came · on all those who were listening to the message.
10:45  And the believers, from among the circumcised, who came with · Peter, were amazed that even on the Gentiles was the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out.
10:46  For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and magnifying · God. Then Peter declared,
10:47  “Surely no one is able to withhold the water so that these people cannot be baptized who received the Holy Spirit · just as we did, can he?
10:48  And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.
