| 90:1 | | I swear (or call to witness) this City (Mecca) | | 90:2 | | And you (Muhammad) are a dweller of this City | | 90:3 | | And the (mystic ties) of Parent and Child | | 90:4 | | We have surely created man in suffering (struggle, trouble, sorrow) | | 90:5 | | Does he think that none has power over him | | 90:6 | | He says, "I have squandered wealth in plenty;" | | 90:7 | | Does he think that no one sees him | | 90:8 | | Have We not made for him two eye | | 90:9 | | And a tongue, and two lips | | 90:10 | | And guided him in the two highways | | 90:11 | | But he has not attempted the ascent | | 90:12 | | And what will explain to you the ascent | | 90:13 | | It is freeing captives (or prisoners, slaves, the restricted or bound) | | 90:14 | | Or feeding on the day of privation | | 90:15 | | An orphan who is a kin | | 90:16 | | Or a destitute lying in the dust (of misery) | | 90:17 | | And again (it is) to be of those who believe and encourage each other to patience, and encourage each other to mercy | | 90:18 | | These are the fellows of the right | | 90:19 | | But those who disbelieve in our signs, they are the fellows of the left | | 90:20 | | For them is the enclosing Fire |
