| | N J Dawood (2014) rendition of Surah The Enshrouded One, Bundled Up, The Mantled One(al-Muzammil) --- |
---|
73:1 | | YOU² THAT are wrapped up in your mantle |
73:2 | | keep vigil all night, save for a few hours |
73:3 | | half the night, or even less |
73:4 | | or a little more ― and with measured tone recite the Koran |
73:5 | | for We are about to address to you words of surpassing gravity |
73:6 | | It is in the watches of the night that impressions are strongest and words most eloquent |
73:7 | | in the day-time you are hard-pressed for long |
73:8 | | And remember the name of your Lord and dedicate yourself to Him utterly |
73:9 | | He is the Lord of the East and of the West: there is no god but Him. Take Him for your Protector |
73:10 | | Bear patiently with what they¹ say, and take leave of them courteously |
73:11 | | Leave to Me those that deny the Truth, those that enjoy the comforts of this life; bear with them yet a little while |
73:12 | | We have in store for them heavy fetters and a blazing fire |
73:13 | | choking food and harrowing torment |
73:14 | | on the day when the earth shall quiver with all the mountains, and the mountains crumble into heaps of shifting sand |
73:15 | | We have sent forth an apostle to testify against you, just as We sent forth an apostle to Pharaoh |
73:16 | | Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so that with a baleful scourge We smote him |
73:17 | | If you persist in unbelief, how will you escape the day that will make children grey-haired |
73:18 | | the day the sky will split asunder? God‘s promise shall surely be fulfilled |
73:19 | | This is but an Admonition. Let him who will, take the right path to his Lord |
73:20 | | Your Lord knows that you² sometimes keep vigil well-nigh two-thirds of the night, and sometimes half or one-third of it, as do others among your followers. God measures the night and the day. He knows you³ cannot count it‘s length, and turned to you mercifully. Recite from the Koran as many verses as you are able; He knows that among you there are sick men and others roaming the land in search of God‘s bounty; and yet others fighting for the cause of God. Recite from it, then, as many verses as you are able. Attend to your prayers, render the alms levy, and give God a generous loan. Whatever good you do for your own souls you shall surely find it with God, ennobled and more richly rewarded. And implore God to forgive you; surely God is forgiving and compassionate |
