N J Dawood (2014) rendition of Surah Banning, Prohibition(at-Tahrim)
---
66:1 PROPHET, WHY do you prohibit that which God has made lawful for you, in seeking to please your wives?¹ God is forgiving and compassionate
66:2 God has given you absolution from such oaths. God is your Master. He is the Omniscient One, the Wise One
66:3 When the Prophet confided a secret to one of his wives; and when she disclosed it and God informed him of this, he made known one part of it and said nothing about the other. And when he had acquainted her with it she said: ‘Who told you this?‘ He said: ‘The All-knowing, the Wise One, told me.&lsquo
66:4 If you two¹ turn to God in repentance, for your hearts have sinned, you shall be pardoned; but if you conspire against him, know that God is his protector, and Gabriel, and the righteous among the faithful. The angels too are his helpers
66:5 It may well be that, if he divorce you, his Lord will give him in your place better wives than yourselves, submissive to God and full of faith, obedient, penitent, devout, and given to fasting; both formerly-wedded and virgins
66:6 Believers, guard yourselves and your kin against a Fire fuelled with men and stones, in the charge of stern and mighty angels who never disobey God‘s command and promptly do whatever they are bidden
66:7 You that disbelieve, make no excuses for yourselves this day. You shall be rewarded but according to what you did.&lsquo
66:8 Believers, turn to God in true repentance. Your Lord may pardon you your sins and admit you into Gardens watered by running brooks, on a day when the Prophet and those who believe with him will suffer no disgrace at the hands of God. Their light will shine in front of them and on their right, and they will say: ‘Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive us. You have power over all things.&lsquo
66:9 Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal sternly with them. Hell shall be their home, evil their fate
66:10 God gave an example to the unbelievers in the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were married to two of Our righteous servants and betrayed them. Their husbands could in no way protect them from God; they were told: ‘Enter the Fire with those that shall enter it.&lsquo
66:11 But to the faithful God gave an example in Pharaoh‘s wife, who said: ‘Lord, build me a house with You in Paradise and deliver me from Pharaoh and his misdeeds. Deliver me from a wrongdoing people.&lsquo
66:12 And in Mary, ‘Imran‘s daughter, who preserved her chastity and into whose womb We breathed Our spirit; who put her trust in the words of her Lord and His Scriptures, and was truly devout
