N J Dawood (2014) rendition of Surah Muhammad(Muhammad)
---
47:1 THOSE WHO disbelieve and debar others from God‘s path He will bring their deed to nothing
47:2 And the faithful who do good works and believe in what has been revealed to Muhammad ― which is the Truth from their Lord ― He will forgive their sins and ennoble their state
47:3 This, because the unbelievers follow falsehood, while the faithful follow the Truth from their Lord. Thus God lays down for mankind their rules of conduct
47:4 When you meet the unbelievers strike off their heads and, when you have wrecked widespread slaughter among them, bind your captives firmly. Then either grant them their freedom or take a ransom from them, until War shall lay down her burdens. Thus shall you do. Had God willed, He could Himself have punished them; but thus shall it be that He may test you, the one by the other. As for those who are slain in the cause of God, He will not bring their deeds to nothing
47:5 He will vouchsafe them guidance and ennoble their estate
47:6 He will admit them into the Paradise He has made known to them
47:7 Believers, if you help God, He will help you and make you strong
47:8 But the unbelievers shall be consigned to perdition. He will bring their deeds to nothing.
47:9 Because they have abhorred God‘s revelations, He will frustrate their works
47:10 Have they never journeyed through the land and seen what was the fate of those who have gone before them? God destroyed them utterly, and a similar fate awaits the unbelievers
47:11 because God is the protector of the faithful: and because the unbelievers have no protector
47:12 God will surely admit those who believe and do good works to Gardens watered by running brooks. The unbelievers take their fill of pleasure and eat as cattle eat: but the Fire shall be their resting place
47:13 How many cities were mightier than your own city, which has cast you¹ out! We obliterated them, and there was none to succour them
47:14 Can he who follows the guidance of his Lord be compared to him who is led by his desires and whose foul deeds seem fair to him
47:15 Such is the Paradise which the righteous have been promised: therein shall flow rivers of water undefiled, and rivers of milk for ever fresh; rivers of wine delectable to those that drink it, and rivers of clarified honey. Therein shall they have of every fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. Are they to be compared to those who shall abide in Hell forever, and drink scalding water that will tear their bowels to pieces
47:16 Some of them indeed listen to you, but no sooner do they leave your presence than they ask those endowed with knowledge: ‘What did he say just now?‘ Such are the those whose hearts are sealed by God, and who follow their base desires
47:17 As for those who follow the right path, He will increase their guidance and show them the way to righteousness
47:18 Are they waiting for the Hour to overtake them suddenly? Its portents have already come. How else will they be reminded when it does overtake them
47:19 Know that there is no deity but God. Implore Him to forgive your sins and to forgive the true believers, men and women. God knows your busy haunts and resting-places
47:20 And the faithful say: ‘If only a sūrah were revealed!‘ But when a forthright sūrah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see the infirm of heart staring at you as though they are fainting away for fear of death
47:21 Yet obedience and courteous speech would become them better. Indeed, should fighting be ordained, it would be better for them to be true to God
47:22 If you¹ renounced the Faith, would you not do evil in the land and violate the ties of blood
47:23 Such are those whom God has cursed, leaving them deaf and sightless
47:24 Will they not ponder on the Koran? Or are there locks upon their hearts
47:25 Those who return to unbelief after God‘s guidance has been revealed to them are seduced by Satan and inspired by him
47:26 That is because they say to those who abhor the Word of God: ‘We shall obey you in some matters.‘ God knows their secret talk
47:27 What will they do when the angels carry off their souls, striking their faces and their backs
47:28 Because they follow what has provoked the ire of God and abhor what pleases Him, He will bring their works to nothing
47:29 Or do the feeble-hearted think that God will not reveal their malice
47:30 If We pleased, We could point them out to you and you would recognize them promptly by their looks: but you will surely recognize them from the tenor of their speech. God has knowledge of all your actions
47:31 We shall put you to the proof until We know the valiant and the resolute among you; and We will test all that is said about you
47:32 The unbelievers who debar others from the path of God and disobey the Apostle after they have seen the light shall in no way harm God. He will bring their works to nothing
47:33 Believers, obey God and obey the Apostle, and let not your labours come to nothing
47:34 Those that disbelieve and debar others from the path of God and in the end die unbelievers God will never forgive
47:35 Therefore do not falter or sue for peace when you have gained the upper hand. God is on your side and will not grudge you the recompense of your labours
47:36 The life of this world is but a sport and a diversion. He will give you your deserts if you believe in Him and fear Him. He does not demand your wealth
47:37 if He demanded all and strongly pressed you, you would grow niggardly, and this would show your malice
47:38 It is you who are being called upon to give in the cause of God. Some among you are ungenerous; yet whoever is ungenerous to His cause is ungenerous only to his own soul. Indeed, God does not need you, but you need Him. If you pay no heed, He will replace you by other people unlike you
